By the 1940s, Bengal had been changed by famine, war and political uncertainty. Artists were answering to a world that felt a long way from the idealised imagery of earlier decades.
They began experimenting more freely with figure, colour and everyday life. Pran Krishna Pal and Gopal Ghose used paper to catch village scenes, still lifes and ordinary subjects with more immediacy and more force. These works sit in a period caught between two worlds: colonial rule and Independence, tradition and experimentation. Paper was the direct way to record it.
