Watch now in YouTube, a conversation between artists Zakkir Hussain and T. V. Santhosh.

This conversation was recorded in the context of Hussain’s solo exhibition titled 'Traces of Light Amongst Ruins'. With a shared history as Kerala artists from the Baroda school, Santhosh approaches Hussain’s practice from its roots: beginning with the influences that Trivandrum and Baroda have had on his work, and his artistic influences from the Kerala Radicals to European neo-expressionists. The conversation also delves into Hussain’s experiments with imagery, his technical process, the place of politics and violence in art, and what Hussain considers to be the project of his art.

‘The first significant and fruitful convergence of my intellectual and pictorial preoccupations occurred in 1975. I had been working with a kind of autobiographical and expressionist drawing when I became preoccupied with an image of the sitting man – the worker – encountered daily in the suburban train.’ - Sudhir Patwardhan

This is your reminder to visit 'Traces of Light Amongst Ruins' at The Guild in Alibaug if you haven't already! The Zakkir Hussain solo exhibition makes a careful negotiation between the vulnerability of consciousness and the cynicism of the world. The works connect dilapidated ecosystems and fragile lifelines across time and space.

The exhibition is on view at the gallery every day, from 10 am to 630 pm, until 26 April.

"Past–Present–Continuous: 25 Years of The Guild" is the exhibition catalogue produced in conjunction with the exhibition of the same title, held at Bikaner House, CCA Galleries, New Delhi in 2022, marking the silver jubilee of The Guild. The exhibition brought together works by thirty-seven artists and was curated by nine curators, each developing a distinct curatorial presentation centred on a select group of artists.

The catalogue comprises over 190 full-colour reproductions of the exhibited works, accompanied by a selection of installation views that document the exhibition’s spatial and curatorial framework. It further includes a series of curatorial essays that critically situate the participating artists’ practices within broader art-historical and socio-cultural contexts spanning the past quarter century. Complementing these contributions is an extended essay by curator, writer Siddharth Sivakumar, offering a considered analysis of the development and significance of contemporary Indian art since 1997.

In addition to its focus on the exhibited works, the publication incorporates a dedicated section on archival materials presented as part of the exhibition. This section includes documentation of exhibition history, along with photographs and ephemera from 1997 onwards, thereby providing insight into the institution’s evolving curatorial frameworks and artistic engagements.

The book is now available for purchase on our website shipping to India or internationally. Check our or in our story today! The book will be available at a discounted price of Rs 3500 for the first 3 months, and later for Rs 4500.

'The union of dissimilar things and objects in my works embodies the testaments of life. Objects deemed useless in daily routine, when brought into contact with the human form, are elevated out of their initial uselessness.' - Zakkir Hussain

This work is part of a series of 3 diptychs titled 'Traces of Decimated' - the series is on view at 'Traces of Light Amongst Ruins' at The Guild. The show is on view until 20 April.

Really fantastic to see 'of worlds within worlds' at the Lalithakala Akademi's Durbar Hall last week.

Roobina Karode's curation of Gulammohammed Sheikh's vast practice here is a pleasure to see, really bringing these aspects of engagement with memory, history, art together. Works from across decades! Also great to see his poetry brought together with his art.

The show is open till 31 March. All in Kochi, really must check it out.
