Lucknow Bioscope A City Museum of Culture Lucknow Bioscope is a first of its kind initiative to explore, preserve and celebrate Lucknow’s rich and diverse cultural heritage.

It aims to tell a story of Lucknow grounded in both the extraordinary and everyday, the past and its reflection in the present, highlighting its people, communities, lifestyles, art, architecture, music, literature, and cuisine. To be started as a dynamic online museum presenting themes on Lucknow life and culture, Lucknow Bioscope is envisaged to later develop an interactive physical space to feature exhibits, performances, lectures, guided tours and home-cooked food. Both initiatives will offer visitors an immersive experience of Lakhnaviyat – the tangible and intangible qualities that make up the spirit of the city.

Every gali has a kahani, every mod a memory!

Kahani Har Mod Par, a film by Sanatkada Trust, brings you three stories from the old lanes of Lucknow, capturing the lives of its people, their crafts, shared memories and community bonds.

From ageing havelis to changing streets, the film explores the challenges and resilience that shape life in these historic neighbourhoods.

There are many Lucknows that exist among us, including the one overshadowed by narratives and by those who had the privilege of telling history. We hosted the launch of Lucknow: The Turbulent History by Dr Roshan Taqui, and the event touched upon many such aspects.

The evening brought together anecdotes, stories and a heartfelt reading by Dr Sanobar Haider (Kidwai), Associate Professor of History at Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Government P.G. College, Lucknow.

This was followed by an engaging conversation between Dr Taqui and the audience, moderated by Dr Yasmin Khan, historian and educationist.

Nayaab Nageene is a series of conversations with eminent citizens of Lucknow about their work, their family, and their city.

Wajahat Habibullah, distinguished bureaucrat, is a retired IAS officer of the Jammu and Kashmir cadre. He has held influential positions such as Chairperson of the National Commission for Minorities, and India’s
first Chief Information Commissioner.

He has authored several books on Kashmir. His memoir ‘My Years with
Rajiv’, gives an account of his work in the Prime Minister’s Office under Rajiv Gandhi.

Wajahat Habibullah belongs to a prominent and progressive family of Talukdars. His father General Enaith Habibullah was the founder commandant of the National Defence Academy and his mother Begum Hamida Habibullah was a parliamentarian and an eminent educationist.

Our fifth exhibition, Malika-e-Ghazal: The Life and Legacy of Begum Akhtar, celebrated her life and music, and their significance as part of Lucknow’s cultural memory.

Jais, a small qasba 75 kilometres from Lucknow,
has produced many theologians, scholars and poets.

Its ancient monuments include dargahs of Sufi saints, Imambaras, and reinforced remains of a wall said to be from the 16th century.

Its syncretic traditions include events around Muharram, Ram Lila, and melas at Sufi shrines.

Local dishes such as Mashkalia and Satpaita are popular, and also jalebi made of jaggery. White khurma is distributed at mazaars.

Awadh ke Qasbati Rang, our seventh exhibition, brings to life the diverse cultural histories and living traditions of qasbas around Lucknow.

The 10th Museum Mixer looked at the richness and everyday presence of the Awadhi language through an engaging conversation with poet Shadab Javed.

From idioms, poetry to songs and regional variations, the evening explored Awadhi’s oral traditions that continue to crucial part of the region. Participants also shared familiar verses, muhavaras and memories associated with the language.

We invite you to Panno Ke Bheetar, the book launch of ‘Lucknow: The Turbulent History’, with Roshan Taqui in conversation with Yasmin Khan.

Lucknow: The Turbulent History by Roshan Taqui , talks about the crucial and critical timeline of Lucknow- from the Golden period of Lucknow to the destruction and decadence of the city’s culture and tehzeeb. The book is written by Dr Roshan Taqui, an eminent Indian historian and alumnus of Aligarh Muslim University. Specialising in the culture and monuments of Lucknow, Conservation and the problems faced by the old monuments, Dr Taqui has over 140 research papers to his credit.

Dr Taqui will be in conversation with Yasmin Khan, an educationist and historian with over 24 years of teaching experience and a background in grassroots social reform. Based in Lucknow, Yasmin is actively involved in social welfare initiatives including women’s empowerment, children, and community development.
