SRIKRISHNA MUSEUM
Kurukshetra Development Board, Kurukshetra

Krishna, the embodiment of great aesthetics, intellect and spiritual glory, has been a subject of adoration since ages. Unfolding the mystery of Lord Krishna is an enchanting experience, as every time you unwind the fabric of Lord Krishna you discover a new dimension to it. The divinity and human aspect of Lord Krishna, as revealed by

his character in literature, is unparalleled in the history of human civilization. He is the most popular character in Indian myths and legends. The personality and teachings of Lord Krishna have permeated the national ethos, and his exploits and miracles are a source of inspiration for the artistic expressions in traditional folk and classical art forms across the country. Srikrishna Museum was established in the year 1987 by Kurukshetra Development Board with a view to enlighten the people about the ideas and ideals of Lord Krishna. Subsequently it was shifted to the present building in 1991 and a second museum building was added in the year 1995. Further, in the year 2012, a Multimedia Mahabharata & Gita Gallery was created as the third part of the museum building. The theme of the museum is Lord Krishna, Kurukshetra and Mahabharata. Srikrishna Museum houses nine galleries spread over its three buildings which display the artefacts representing Lord Krishna as god head, an incarnation of Vishnu. Kurukshetra has a rich heritage of art, architecture and culture as revealed by its artefacts in the forms of stone icons, terracottas, potteries and architectural members. The museum houses the remains of the Harappan, P.G.W. (Mahabharata) and historical periods. The archaeological artefacts recovered from excavations of the mature Harappan sites like Banawali, Kunal, Bhirdana, Balu, Rakhigarhi etc. are also displayed here. It also exhibits some exquisite stone sculptures on Krishna-Vishnu theme, ranging from C. 1st to 12th century C.E., recovered from various parts of Haryana and other places associated with Lord Krishna. The major attractions of the archaeological gallery are the antiquities recovered from legendry city of Dwarka which was the capital of Yadavas during Mahabharata times. The Mahabharata is a treasure house of Indian wisdom and knowledge. In addition to being an epic, the Mahabharata contains a collection of writings on a broad spectrum of human learning including ethics, law, philosophy, history, geography, genealogy and religion. It also features a number of legends, moral stories and local tales - all woven into an elaborate narrative. Multimedia Mahabharata & Gita Gallery of the museum presents the story of the Mahabharata in a linear fashion from Naga Yajna of King Janmejaya to ascent of Pandavas to the Himalayas in the end.
