Founded by Dr.Prakash Chandra Kejariwal,Chitrakoot Art Gallery grew out of an attempt to create a display space for artists in south Calcutta in the beginning of 1980s.It is the oldest commercial art gallery of Kolkata. Help came from all the artists like Bikash Bhattacharya, Ganesh Pyne, Paritosh Sen, Shyamal Dutta Ray, Amitabha Banerjee, Sunil Das, Dharmanarayan Dasgupta, Lalu Prasad Shaw and mo

re. The gallery had many shows of these artists and other artists from Delhi and Bombay, prominent being Ram Kumar, Paramjit Singh and Akbar Padamsee. The gallery developed the position of the only art – salon in Calcutta with evening sessions of many of the above mentioned artists for years to come. Today it boasts of a collection of 4000 works including the Bengal Masters of early period like Jamini Roy, Deviprasad Roychowdhury, Hemen Mazumdar, Rabindranath Tagore, Abanindranath Tagore, Gaganendranath Tagore, Nandalal and their disciples. The collection includes very rare 100 to 150 year old paintings.With almost a museum like collection the gallery is visited by art lovers from all over the world and is famous for its unique collection of Bengal Art. The gallery also specializes in shows of art from various countries which they had in the last 30 years, organizing unique exhibitions like ’99 names of Allah’ and ‘The Merchant of Dreams’. They have a Photography division, an art library, an art restoration unit, and art valuation service. The gallery has also organized many art camps including one in Cambodia and other in Nepal.
