Several hundred years ago, the 14th Century Moroccan traveller, Ibn Batuta, wrote of the fine and exquisite textiles of Mubarakpur, an ancient weaving cluster, already established a hundred odd km from Benaras.
Indian silk tissue rose to prominence during the early Mughal period first developed in the royal weaving centers of Benaras and later evolved further through the weavers of Kanchipuram and Uppada. The intricate weave creates a light translucent, and shimmering fabric, much favoured by royals for it's luxurious feel.
