*The “Equals” Series by Abid Shaikh
Abid Shaikh’s “Equals” series was born out of a deep fascination with the human body as both a vessel of strength and a symbol of vulnerability. While creating these works, Shaikh wasn’t simply painting wrestlers or athletes — he was exploring the timeless idea of equality.

The act of wrestling became his metaphor. Two bodies locked in struggle represent more than competition: they reflect balance, tension, and the push-and-pull of human relationships. No matter who wins, in that moment of physical intensity both are equals — dependent on one another to create meaning.

Shaikh’s thought process revolved around stripping away distractions. By using a monochrome palette, he removed color and cultural identifiers, allowing viewers to focus purely on form, light, and movement. Muscles, skin, and shadows became universal symbols of resilience and unity.

Each painting in the series was carefully constructed to capture a fleeting second — the grip of hands, the twist of a torso, the resistance of muscle under pressure. These frozen moments invite the viewer to reflect on themes larger than sport: power, survival, dignity, and the human need to connect.

At its core, “Equals” is a celebration of humanity — reminding us that in our struggles, we find both opposition and kinship.
