“Travelling Through Kerala with a Camera in 1983”
is a photography exhibition featuring photographs by author and Kerala scholar Robin Jeffrey, gifted to the Kerala Museum's Janal Archive. Presented alongside excerpts from his writing, they give us an insight into his observations about Kerala society.

In 1983, Robin Jeffrey travelled from Kanyakumari to Kochi with a question:

How was a changing world shaping the lives of ordinary people?

Guided by his interest in migration, development, and daily life in Kerala, he photographed homes, streets, curious objects, and people he met along the journey.

Visit the exhibition, now on view at the Kerala Museum.

As a build up to their exhibition artworks, the kids worked with the Museum's collaborator, artist and educator Augustine.

Intern @

For three days, the morning air was filled with the smell of wet clay as kids sculpted vessels, pots, and a jungle of monkeys and elephants.

During lunch, the kids shared their truth: their flats and villas are not run friendly, and the playgrounds at home are now surrounded by houses. Many are left with only a car porch to play in.

They told me they love having lunch on the ground here, preferring the grass over sitting on tiles. While they admit they would love slides and swings, they value being in nature and the free space.

Here, the world is finally big enough for them to run.
