Kavita Jaiswal’s practice has evolved across drawing, painting, photography, video and moving image, moving from recognisable forms towards abstraction as the central language of her work. Over four decades, she has pursued an intuitive enquiry into what lies beyond physical form—an underlying, timeless presence through which the visible world comes into being.

Her abstractions are rooted in this search for what cannot always be seen or defined. Form becomes a point of departure rather than an end, allowing gesture, image and movement to suggest a reality that exists beyond the individual and the immediate. Her work reflects her continuing interest in the connections between image, perception, time and the forces that exist beyond the visible., works intuitive abstractions explore gesture, memory and the emotional language of form.

Shivani Aggarwal explores the quiet tensions between care and control, containment and expression, function and dysfunction.
Working with wood, thread and found materials, she transforms familiar objects into intricate structures that seem to hold, bind, protect and release—while ultimately holding nothing but space.

Her sculptures are born from an introspective engagement with memory, domesticity, gendered labour and societal conditioning. They ask us to slow down and look closely, finding possibility within emptiness and meaning within stillness.

“What once held something becomes a form that holds space and in that emptiness, possibility.”

Prasanta Ghosh | The space between thought and form.

Each line in Prasanta Ghosh’s drawings is an act of searching rather than describing. Through repetition and quiet precision, his works inhabit the space where memory, perception and experience overlap, allowing forms to emerge without ever becoming completely fixed. The image resists certainty, inviting us to linger in the unnamed moment before language gives meaning.
It is within this delicate tension—between intention and understanding—that the true presence of the work unfolds.

Ashu Gupta | Quiet Surface

In Quiet Surface, Ashu Gupta invites us into a world where the ordinary becomes deeply poetic. Working with pen and ink, alongside the meditative process of paper piercing, she transforms paper into a tactile surface that holds memory, time and quiet attention. Rooted in observation, her practice explores domestic spaces, old houses, overlooked objects, roots and silence. Built through slow, repetitive gestures, each mark and puncture becomes both a record of presence and an act of remembrance—revealing that what appears still on the surface often carries an unseen emotional landscape beneath.

Ashu Gupta is one of six artists featured in Quiet Surface, a group exhibition that considers paper not simply as a support, but as a site of thought, gesture and transformation.

Through the series Grids of Silence and Lines of Shadow, Tekade maps this shifting terrain. The grid becomes a metaphor for structure, control, and urban order — an echo of planning and replacement. The line, in contrast, traces what slips through that order — moments of light, life, gesture, and memory. His process with paper — folding, cutting, layering — is both meditative and precise. It speaks of surrender and discipline, of creation and erasure. Light itself becomes a medium, revealing the truth - the change .

Here, silence is alive — the pause before thought, the stillness that holds meaning. Shadow becomes its quiet witness, recording what time and progress leave behind. Together, they whisper the rhythm of a world in flux — where cities evolve, spaces dissolve, and the unseen within us continues to breathe beneath what remains.

QUIET SURFACE

STUDIO ART | New Delhi

A surface may appear still, but it is rarely silent. Quiet Surface brings together six artists—Sachin Tekade, Shivani Aggarwal, Kavita Jaiswal, Pratul Dash, Ashu Gupta and Harish Ojha—whose practices approach paper as more than a support for an image. Across these works, paper becomes a site of thought, memory, gesture and transformation: folded, layered, pierced, marked, stained, drawn upon and built into.

What appears quiet on the surface often contains a world beneath it. A line can hold a thought that was never spoken. A mark can become a trace of something remembered or slowly disappearing. A fold can alter space; a layer can conceal as much as it reveals. Through accumulation, incision, repetition and restraint, the artists allow the material itself to carry time. There is also a particular intimacy in working with paper. Unlike the distance of a monumental surface, paper registers the hand. It absorbs, records and retains. Its fragility makes every intervention visible—every pressure, erasure, cut, stain or mark becoming part of its history. In these works, silence is therefore not an absence. It is a state of attention. It may hold memory, landscape, architecture, the body, the interior world or the traces of lived experience. It may speak through what remains—or through what has been deliberately left unsaid. Quiet Surface invites us to slow down and look closely: to listen to what the surface does not immediately say, and to discover how much can exist within stillness.

What remains when everything unnecessary falls away?
Studio Art presents The Quiet Surface, bringing together six artists whose practices explore paper as a space for memory, gesture, presence and transformation.
Through drawing, layering, piercing, folding, marking and erasure, the surface becomes more than what we see. It holds what is remembered, what is restrained, what is revealed—and what remains quietly beneath.
