Founded in 1954, as the premier museum of modern art of a newly independent nation, the NGMA houses and showcases masterpieces of the changing art forms of modern India spanning more than one hundred and fifty years. The museum was formally inaugurated by the then Vice-president Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, in the presence of the
then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. Run and administered as a subordinate

office of the Ministry of Culture, it continues to reaffirm its role as a repository of modern and contemporary visual, plastic and new media arts. The main objectives of the NGMA are to create sensitivity, awareness, and understanding among the public towards our art expressions, specially the contemporary idiom. Through cultural exchanges, we showcase international art in our country, and promote modern and contemporary Indian art abroad. Our exhibitions are aimed at audiences of all ages and experiences, engaging viewers to see the relevance between life, contemporary experience, and its reflection in art.

Ksh*tindranath Majumdar’s paintings breathe with quiet devotion; where clouds carry longing, colours hold emotion, and every line flows like poetry. Rooted in the spiritual currents of the Bengal School, his works transform epics, myths, and bhakti into moments of tenderness, grace, and timeless visual contemplation.
