“The simplest of lines is enough to convey a multitude of meanings,” says A. V. Ilango.
Working within this language, Ilango distills form to its essentials, allowing emotion to emerge through suggestion. In Message of Love, the figure and the swan come together in a quiet act of exchange, evoking the idea of a message carried across distance, inspired by Kalidasa’s Meghaduta.

In the paintings of M. Senathipathi, figures emerge through a network of line and pattern, carrying both detail and intensity.
The theme of mother and child is explored through interwoven lines that shape the presence of the two figures. Rhythm and repetition guide the image, allowing the relationship to unfold with clarity and depth.

Enduring Bonds

For Gnana, relationships remain central to his sculptural practice. Working in bronze, he revisits the enduring theme of the mother and child, shaping it through a language of form that is both direct and expressive.
The figures stand together as a reflection of one of the most fundamental human bonds, continuing his exploration of human connection and memory.

Even in stillness, relationship remains dynamic.
Two entities stand beside one another; independent, yet interconnected. The presence here suggests interdependence shaped through intention.
A balance shaped by choice, not chance.

In Senathipathi’s work, line becomes both structure and expression, shaping figures that hold complexity within clarity. Fragmented lines converge without fully dissolving into one another. There is tension, yet there is cohesion. Masculine and feminine energies remain distinct, yet inseparable within the same space.

Drawing inspiration from his native Gopichettipalayam, A. V. Ilango presents marriage as the coming together of two distinct energies — strength and softness, action and grace. Like complementary forces in nature, they exist in balance.
In that balance, harmony finds its form. The union becomes not just a ritual, but a shared rhythm of life.

The male and female energy within every union exists a quiet polarity, strength and surrender, stillness and intensity. These forces do not oppose; they sustain one another. Here, opposing energies are held in a state of quiet equilibrium. In that recognition, harmony becomes enduring.

This past week has been a wonderful
experience at the Lalit Kala Akademi Chennai. My paintings and installation
on view as part of the group show pertained to the fragility of time which was one of the concepts that the curator Mrs Ashrafi Bhagat wanted us to explore.

The mind is a vast, ever-changing terrain that invites exploration and cartography through various modalities. My perception of time and space is one of fragility, wherein the constraints of these dimensions enable me to access an inner realm and forge endless possibilities. Reflecting on my childhood, I recall moments of introspection that grappled with the mysteries of mortality and death, precipitating phases of existential trepidation as a solitary child beset by the fear of loss.

However, my Ishta devata served as a source of solace, and I drew strength from my higher consciousness, even if unconsciously. As I continue to delve into spiritual studies, I recognize the significance of this inward turn.

This body of work is an exploration of my inner space, wherein I seek to experience and deepen my understanding of inner leisure. Guided by the aspiration to connect with my higher nature, which I symbolize through figures such as Vishnu, Shiva, and the Devi, I navigate the complexities of samsara with a sense of Samatvam, or inner equilibrium. Through color and metaphor I depict my world, a space where I seek to cultivate stillness and pursue this quest with an informed and discerning mind. As the mind navigates the complexities of life, confronting challenges and stereotypes, it embarks on an inward journey to discover the sanctuary of one's true nature. This quest becomes an existential imperative, driving the individual to shed layers of conditioning and awaken to a state of heightened awareness. In this context, the concept of Samatvam emerges as a guiding principle, enabling the individual to maintain equilibrium amidst the vicissitudes of pleasure and sorrow.

The installation "In Search of Samatvam I and II" embodies this narrative through two sculptures, each representing a human figure – male and female – rendered in steel and anchored to a wooden base. This configuration suggests

Biswajit, as a cartoonist, has always been fascinated by how a single line can hold rhythm, movement, and emotion. When invited to interpret Odissi—the timeless classical dance form of Odisha—for this group show, he saw it as an opportunity to explore how grace, geometry, and expression can be reimagined through the simplicity of cartoon art. Odissi is known for its lyrical fluidity, sculptural poses, and eyes that speak entire stories. In many ways, it feels like drawing in motion. His work for this exhibition captures this elegance through a touch of humour—gentle, observational, and deeply respectful. Instead of recreating the dance literally, he explores the visual poetry of mudras, the dramatic beauty of postures, the rhythmic flow of the dance, and the narrative charm that makes Odissi unforgettable. Humour, to him, is a bridge—it invites viewers to engage without fear or formality. By infusing a classical form with lightness, he hopes to make Odissi accessible to those who may not know it, while still honouring its depth and tradition. His cartoons celebrate what lies at the heart of Odissi: devotion, discipline, storytelling, and the sheer joy of movement—captured one playful line at a time.
