“PRERANA” ART & CULTURE”
Culture plays an important role in the development of any nation. It represents a set of shared attitudes, values, goals and practices. Culture and creativity manifest themselves in almost all economic, social and other activities. A country as diverse as India is symbolized by the plurality of its culture. India has one of the world’s largest collections of songs, music,
dance, theatre, folk traditions, performing arts, rites and rituals, paintings and writings. In Odisha Western Odisha’s songs and dance have a unique place in the cultural firmament of the world. The western Orissa has developed a unique culture which expresses itself in a language called Sambalpuri/Koshli that is distinct from Odisha. The folk songs and dances of Sambalpuri are not only expressions of emotions but also of finer elements of life and living scientifically, fused into the rhythm of the percussion instruments of the region. In fact, the songs and dances have been revived and
recognised in the past quarter of a century. Sambalpuri dance is so popular in world. The Sambalpuri dance has a number of forms, with different lyrics and rhythms, that have originated from different castes/tribes and ethnic groups in the area and are based on different religious festivals/rituals and deities. Although a number of folk instruments were used in Sambalpuri music, song and dance, only four among the oldest percussion instruments such as dhol, mandal, nishan and Tasha are now used. Our effort is that more and more people may know about our culture, so that they may return to their own rich culture and stop running behind western culture blindly as west has also understood the divinity of our culture and pursuing eastern art and culture. The day is not very far away when the elusion and triviality of western culture will be understood and people will return to their home and will live in peace and harmony, and the dream of “PRERANA” will come true.
“PRERANA” implements a number of programmes aimed at providing financial support to individuals, groups and cultural organizations engaged in performing, visual and literary arts of our area culture.
