Menaka and Shakuntala, Porcelain, made in Germany
This unusual porcelain Menaka and Shakuntala statue, in the style of the the famous Ravi Varma painting and oleograph, was made in Germany in the late 19th to early 20th century. German porcelain makers produced figurines of Hindu gods and goddesses for the Indian market, inspired by popular paintings of artists like Raja Ravi Varma. These realistic, three-dimensional representations were expensive and status symbols.
Shakuntala’s story is told in the epic poem Mahabharata. The porcelain figure depicts the moment after Shakuntala, caught up in reverie of her husband King Dushyanta, failed to greet Rishi Durvasa, who cursed her that the person she was thinking of would forget her. King Dushyanta indeed then failed to recognise her when she went to his palace. This piece portrays how Shakuntala, deeply disappointed, took refuge in her mother Menaka’s arms and was spirited away to the heavens.

Mrinal Dey, Big Deal, 60 x 48 inches, Tempera on Canvas

Mrinal Dey’s paintings are a satirical commentary about the self-inflicted trappings of modern life. The central figure, always outsized, symbolizes over-consumption and the acute sense of loneliness caused by consumerism. These figures, with their cold hard stares, transfix the viewer by sending a jolt of simultaneous awe and repulsion in them. Mrinal Dey, through his evocative art, raises questions about the present-day commodification of almost all people and objects, including art.

The Pelican Queen, Ganapati Hegde, 30 x 30 inches, Acrylic and Oil on Canvas
Contemporary artist Ganapati Hegde’s artworks take inspiration from the rapturously green and radiant landscape of coastal Karnataka, where he grew up. Teeming with plants, flowers, birds, animals or insects, his paintings depict half-real, half-imagined worlds, layered with fantastical and unexpected elements. There is an undercurrent of fable-like storytelling that enlivens his works, compelling a viewer to unravel its varied perspectives.

Yakshagana Gombeyata (Puppet)
Yakshagana or “the song of the Yaksha” (celestial beings) is a traditional dance-drama, which enacts stories drawn from the Ramayana and Mahabharata amongst others.

This striking wooden Yakshagana Gombeyata (puppet) from North Karnataka is highly articulated with joints at the legs, shoulders, elbows, hips and knees. Using six strings, the puppeteers would manipulate them from above, with sometimes two or three puppeteers needed for more complex movements. At their peak, thirty or forty figures would be necessary for each performance, but after the 16th century the art went into decline and disappeared almost completely. The figures would be dressed according to the character they were playing, with only the painted parts and face showing.
