I’ve been wanting to create an illustrated bird map of Maharashtra for a long time, and I’m delighted to finally share it with you.

Illustrating a map like this involves much more than drawing—it begins with extensive research, followed by the careful process of illustrating each species. I’m grateful to eBird.org for providing valuable information on the birds of Maharashtra, including both resident breeding species and migratory visitors.

I’ve done my best to include as many birds as possible, though a few had to be left out due to space limitations. My hope is that this map serves as a useful resource for anyone interested in learning about Maharashtra’s rich bird diversity and inspires more people to appreciate the fascinating world of birds.

I never imagined that a small trip to Akshi Beach with my sister during the lockdown would shape so much of my work. Akshi welcomes thousands of migratory shorebirds every winter, and it was my sister who first introduced me to this fascinating world of birds.

Before that, I knew only one kind of seabird—the gulls that follow the Mumbai–Alibag ferry because people throw them chips. Sadly, many don’t realize that processed food is harmful to these birds.

On the occasion of World seabirds (Waders) Day, I’m sharing a few of the seabird illustrations I’ve created over the years.

Waders of India — an illustration that didn’t make it into my 2026 calendar because November already featured another species. India is home to 83 species of waders, including resident birds, winter migrants along the Central Asian Flyway, and a few rare visitors. Fitting them all onto one page was quite a challenge.

A public awareness poster I designed for BNHS about the birds of Akshi Beach and the importance of protecting their habitat.

Looking back, it’s amazing how one quiet morning at the beach grew into years of observing, learning, and illustrating these beautiful birds.
