As we wrap up our May Summer Program for children, here's sharing a few glimpses from the Saturday Art Classes that were a part of it.

Over the weeks, children explored still life, portrait studies, paper mâché, and printmaking under the guidance of professional artists and practitioners.

These classes are designed to help children learn artistic skills and techniques that they can take home and continue exploring. The classes also became spaces for curiosity, collaboration, confidence, and community. Through making art together, children connect with materials, ideas, and one another in meaningful ways.

We are grateful to all the young participants, artists/ facilitators, and the parents who became part of this summer journey with us.

Sharing glimpses of young hands solving puzzles, building, creating, and making things. Tactility also has always been an important part of our engagement with children at the museum. Through touch, movement, play, and making, children do not simply observe the world around them, they enter into a relationship with it.

Donald Winnicott, the psychoanalyst had said that “It is in playing and only in playing that the individual child is able to be creative and to use the whole personality.” Through tactile engagement, children explore, imagine, experiment, and make meaning in deeply embodied ways.

Storytelling has been a big part of our collaboration and involvement with children over the years. Through workshops and museum activities, children have explored mythology and stories through art, engaging with characters, symbols, and narratives in creative and imaginative ways.

Our work with children has also included activities where they created their own museums, thinking about collections, display, and how stories can be presented within a museum space. During events and exhibitions, children have even taken on the role of young guides, introducing visitors to artists and artworks with confidence and curiosity.

These experiences have allowed children to engage with art and culture not only through observation, but through participation, creativity, and dialogue.

Celebrating International Museum Day 2026 at the museum with children from Sharda Trust, as part of CSR initiatives at Arvind Ltd. Through stories, conversations, and a hands-on indigo dyeing workshop, the day became a space for creativity, learning, and shared cultural experiences.
Beginning with a tour of the Indigo Art Museum collection, the children explored the histories, practices, and artistic traditions connected to the natural dyeing, before engaging in the process themselves. Moments like these remind us that museums are not only spaces that preserve heritage, but also spaces that bring people together through curiosity, dialogue, and participation.
This year’s International Museum Day theme, “Museums Uniting a Divided World,” highlights the role of museums as bridges between communities, generations, and lived experiences. We are grateful to have shared this meaningful day of art, learning, and connection with the children from Sharda Trust.

For the past many years, through our workshops and classes with children, we have witnessed imagination come alive in the most beautiful ways. From puzzle-making and tie & dye t-shirts to tote bags, origami birds, and so much more, the children have created art filled with imagination, curiosity, and joy.
This is a small salute to the creative spirit of children, and to the incredible art that has come from it!

Working with children is not a didactic process, but a co-creative one. Children do not simply receive knowledge, they shape meaning, ask unexpected questions, imagine new possibilities, and transform the way we experience art, history, and culture. As museums evolve from spaces of passive observation into spaces of participation and dialogue, children remind us that learning is most alive when rooted in curiosity, play, imagination, and shared discovery.

Museum theorist Nina Simon describes participatory cultural institutions as places where visitors can “create, share, and connect with each other around content.” In this spirit, children are not merely audiences within museum spaces, but active contributors to them.

This month, we dedicate our posts to the museum’s engagement with younger audiences as we prepare to host workshops and classes for children through art, storytelling, and shared exploration.

Sundays at the museum are not just about looking at art… they’re about stepping into it 🌼

With Sunday Funday for Kids, we open up the museum as a space for curiosity, play, and imagination. From storytelling and puzzles to origami and zine-making, each workshop invites children to engage with art in ways that feel alive and hands-on.

As we share the upcoming Sunday Funday sessions, we look back at our past sessions, where we had
children gathering around, asking questions, exploring objects, sitting together absorbed in creating and discovering!

These are moments where learning feels like play, and the museum becomes a space of joy and wonder.

We were delighted to welcome Sybille Bührle, Vice Consul (Culture, Press & Protocol), Consulate General of the Federal Republic of Germany, Mumbai, along with Shreyas Foundation's General Manager Ms. Shabnam Haldar for a visit to the museum yesterday afternoon.

The group is seen here with our trustee, Mrs. Jayshree Lalbhai, during their time at the museum. It was a pleasure to share our collections, spaces, and ongoing work, and to engage in meaningful conversations around art, heritage, and cultural exchange.

We look forward to many more such enriching interactions.

We are back this summer with Saturday Art Classes throughout May! The classes carry the same warmth, curiosity, and depth that has shaped our past workshops.
