is a museum of Indian Sculptures, Bronzes, Manuscript Paintings,

and lastly Bead work art pieces. It is situated on a sprawling campus in the western part of the city in an area dotted with educational and research institutes, and in the vicinity of Gujarat University. It is about 7

kilometres from the Railway Station and 12 kilometres from the Airport, therefore, it is easily accessible from any part of the city.

At the Lalbhai Dalpatbhai Museum, the classroom extends into the galleries through "Museum Pathshala" a specially curated programme for school children.

The programme began in 2019 as a school outreach initiative and has since evolved into a multifaceted learning programme shaped by collaboration and feedback. The museum uses its collections as teaching tools, curating sessions that connect directly with students' curricula while creating opportunities for exploration and dialogue. Through close engagement with objects, galleries, and exhibitions, students are encouraged to develop new perspectives on history, art, and culture. Each session is aligned with the curricula of educational boards, including CBSE, ICSE, State Board, and IB, for students in Classes 4 to 10.

These sessions foster a participatory learning environment. Through specially designed worksheets and interactive activities, students are encouraged to think critically and engage meaningfully with the museum's collections. Rather than viewing the past as something distant or ancient, they are invited to experience it as a living presence that continues to resonate in the present.

As we conclude the Summer Programme 2026, we look back at weeks filled with curated sessions that transformed the museum into a space of exploration and hands-on learning for participants of all ages.

Museums are often seen as places that preserve the past, but they are equally spaces that inspire the present. Through interactive activities and workshops, museums become places where people can connect with art, history, craft traditions, and with one another in meaningful ways. Learning happens not only by observing objects in display cases, but also by asking questions and sharing experiences.

We thank everyone who joined us and made this summer so vibrant and memorable. We look forward to welcoming you back for many more journeys of learning and creativity at the museum.

Crystal and Ash: The Buddha at Piprahwa, Vol. 77 No. 2, September-December 2025
This issue brings into focus the journey of the Buddha’s relics unearthed at Piprahwa in Uttar Pradesh. Taken out of India during the colonial period and returned only recently, these relics have been at the centre of long-standing debates shaped by questions of authenticity, competing claims of custodianship, and renewed public attention in recent years.

Through a set of critical essays, the volume moves beyond the story of discovery to examine how such sacred remains are understood, circulated, and displayed. It reflects on India’s engagement with archaeological heritage, situates the Piprahwa finds within broader Buddhist traditions, and considers the complexities of presenting holy objects within museum contexts. The publication also revisits the idea of diplomacy and its continued role in cultural exchange today.

This volume brings together eight essays on the diverse floor drawing practices of India and the ways in which they have adapted, both stylistically and symbolically, to a changing world.
