Joseph Bau Museum We recently discovered that Joseph Bau worked for the Mossad. Joseph never spoke of these activities. Mr. film festivals.

An authentic artist workshop conveys to the visitor the amazing life story of Joseph Bau, reflected in his wide range of creativity, including movies, animation, paintings, graphics, literature, and research of the Hebrew language - all spiced with his special humor stemming from his optimistic view of life. He was recruited to a secret intelligence corps unit that dealt with technical covert oper

ations that utilized his talent for art and graphics. Later, he was transferred, together with other Intelligence Corps personnel, to a similar unit that was formed and worked as part of the intelligence community belonging to the Prime Minister´s office. Bau´s two daughters, Hadasa and Clila, have tried to raise the funds to convert Joseph Bau´s studio into a museum commemorating his holocaust experiences and the artistic and literary works that are the fruits of his very creative life. The studio, under threat of closing, showcases his paintings and works of graphic art, as well as the animation equipment he built himself. It also has a small cinema where he screened the cartoons and movies he produced. How You Can Help

We are sharing this powerful article about Yosef Bau—a Holocaust survivor, artist, forger, and pioneering figure in Israeli animation—whose extraordinary life continues to inspire far beyond his death.

The piece traces his journey from post-war Poland to building a tiny animation studio in Tel Aviv, where he quietly became one of the earliest forces in Israeli animation and visual storytelling. Over time, his full story emerges: his artistry, his resilience, and his role in some of the most extraordinary historical chapters of the 20th century.

Today, his legacy lives on in the Joseph Bau Museum in Tel Aviv, preserved in his original studio and lovingly run by his daughters, Clila and Hadasa Bau. That space is now at immediate risk—the building has been sold and is slated for demolition, forcing an urgent relocation effort.

To save it, the family has launched the “Save the Joseph Bau Museum” crowdfunding campaign to fund the relocation and long-term preservation of the museum as a living cultural and educational center: https://causematch.com/JosephBauMuseum

This isn’t just about a building—it’s about protecting a place where art, humor, survival, and memory are still actively taught and experienced.

How did the Mossad document forger's check drive the police crazy and reach Ben-Gurion?

Yosef Bau was a multi-disciplinary artist, cartoonist, and hilarious animator. But only after his death was the big secret revealed: he was a secret agent who worked for the Mossad, and he was the one who forged documents and certificates for our most famous spies! Yosef worked one room next to David Ben-Gurion.

Every year, our father created a special and witty 'Shana Tovah'. In 1964, his sense of humor (and probably his forgery skills) went a step further, when he created a 'Shana Tovah' that looked exactly like a real bank check! On the check, he wrote "1,000 greetings for the new year."

To put it in context, in those days, 1,000 liras was a lot of money. You could buy a new Amcor refrigerator or a full set of living room furniture for that amount!

Some people took the check seriously, went to the bank with it and asked the manager: "What did we win?". The manager of one of the banks got nervous, didn't understand the joke and called the police! The police officers who came to question our father about "forgery" understood the joke, rolled around in laughter and asked: "Give us some checks like that too, so we can work on our friends."

The special connection to David Ben-Gurion

Our father also sent this amusing 'Happy New Year' to David Ben-Gurion. The original check has been preserved over the years, and is currently in the official archives of the Ben-Gurion Barracks in Sde Boker.

And here we need your wisdom!

Recently, the volunteer who deals with documentation at the Ben-Gurion Desert Home contacted us. It turns out that Yosef, as a professional forger, and so that no one could forge his humorous check, printed a tiny and strange text in the background on a typewriter. The volunteer asked us to help him decipher what is written there for historical documentation.

Many people have already tried to decipher this mysterious and sophisticated text – and no one has succeeded!

Are there any detectives, Mossad codebreakers or people with hawk eyes who can help?

Look at the attached picture – maybe you will be the first to discover what our father wrote there in the background?
