The Steinhardt Museum of Natural History new 9,620 sq m building is home to Israel’s national natural history collections, including five and a half million animals and plants that tell the story of biodiversity in Israel and the Middle East during the past century. Thousands of items from the collection are on display in the museum’s galleries, which cover over 1,700 sq. The museum's seven exhibitions were created by scientific curators and experience designer, together with leading exhibition designers. The Museum team discovers, collects and catalogues millions of items that document the biodiversity of the region and document the development and history of humans and their environment. As the first natural history museum in the region, over 300,000 visitors visited in the first 18 months of activity: families, school children, nature lovers, scientists and tourists from Israel and abroad. The Steinhardt Museum of Natural History is committed to encouraging curiosity, discovery, exploration and enjoyment of the natural world among the general public through world-class scientific research, education and exhibitions. The museum aims to challenge how people think about the natural world – its past, present and future. The museum building, designed by the architectural firm Kimmel-Eshkolot, resembles a ‘treasure chest’, and has become an impressive architectural icon that has already aroused much interest. The museum’s collections are used every year by hundreds of scientists, graduate students and professionals from Israel and abroad for basic and applied research and for developing tools for managing and protecting natural ecosystems while ensuring sustainable use of resources. The scientific knowledge gathered by the museum is used for a range of public activities and influences the policies of decision makers on issues such as river rehabilitation, sustainable use of marine resources, fishing policy planning, biological monitoring, ecological risk assessment, treatment of pests, agricultural import and export, biological pest control, open landscape planning, aviation safety, health and more.
