Gideon Rubin and Sara Berman’s ‘The Fold’ is on view.

On Sara Berman’s practice:

“The Harlequin when embodied by a woman is the “Trickster W***e”. The power and agency of this historical joker is reconsidered with performative flair as Berman examines this trope through paint in an act of obliteration. Starting each and every work with an intricate (harlequin) underpainting which is then absorbed into the portrait to a greater or lesser degree. The Trickster W***e is the constant against which Berman kicks as she reimagines herself as various and continually evolving characters: the Pierrot, the Fool, the Aviatrix, the Renaissance Man, the Fencer, the Dancing Monkey….. Berman uses Auto-Fiction to reconstruct the narrative through Portraiture.
Within the paintings the figures are hidden in plain sight; caught in various poses, postures and assuming the gaze, the characters depicted conveying tragicomical gamut of emotions, from fear, grace, longing and loss: allowing for a confrontational but reflective visual engagement.”

Mirror of the soul—to behold things without overt expression
of thought or judgment. How to present, not describe,
so that one who sees me sees you—and falls silent?
A gentle motion of borrowed time
carries the voice of my solitude.
And here—eyes, lips, nape, the shy distance—
a gaze that seeks to prove nothing.
Is there beauty greater than this?
Is there any order left in this chaotic world?
The waiting—
for the light,
or the voice,
or for that gaze that would reach our depths
and rescue love from within.
Oh reality,
the day will come
when this sweeping vision of beauty
will leave you no choice
but to improve.

Sigalit Landau
ACROSS THE DIVIDE [BRIDGE III], 2022
Video, 15:00 min

A panoramic view between two cliffs overlooking a valley. The waters of the southern basin of the Dead Sea are visible in the deep background, while in the upper part of the frame on the Jordanian side of the Great Rift Valley, rise the Moab mountains. In this pristine landscape, at sunrise, a human figure is seen walking on a flexible rope stretched between the cliffs.

He is concentrated and skillful – walking slowly on the slanting rope. A silhouette to the rising morning sun, he appears to be floating between sky and earth, as he advances step by step. His state of being is close to impossible, as though he is walking on the rim of survival. There is a strong sense of danger in his stance; the danger to forget and the danger to forget how to dream. He walks from south to north, and the moments in which his feet are stepping-non-stepping on the distant hilltops express the essence for this work.

The walking figure is the embodiment of a desired passage along the east-west axis: the vision of crossing the sea, the Salt-Bridge project. This salt crystal passage, on which Landau has been working over the last decade, is still not possible at this point in time. The anguished path of the utopian bridge project is echoed in this beautiful video piece.

Unique

Dawn is a multimedia wall piece by Sigalit Landau that blurs the boundary between painting and sculpture. Rendered in a delicate surface of sand and bonding material, the work captures a moment from Landau’s performative piece Knife Game.

Closely connected to Azkelon (2011) — a video work shown at the Venice Biennale — Dawn draws from a scene in which three players continuously redraw, reshape, and erase borders in the sand.

Here, Landau re-enacts that same tension and play. Two footprints press gently into the sandy surface, a curved line slicing between them — evoking both a trace of movement and a mark of division.

Minimal yet charged, Dawn invites reflection on the temporality of place and trace, the drawing of boundaries, and the imprints we leave behind.

Alon Segev Gallery is pleased to announce the representation of Amit Berman! ✨💜

Born in 1994, Berman lives and works between Tel Aviv and Italy. A self-taught artist, his deeply autobiographical paintings explore themes of intimacy, longing, and the fleeting beauty of everyday moments. His works are driven by emotional vulnerability, transforming and processing personal memories and relationships into poetic visual narratives.

Berman has already exhibited internationally and participated in prestigious residency programs. His work was recently featured at the Jewish Museum Venice during the 2024 Venice Biennale, and in 2025, he will present a solo exhibition at the Haifa Museum of Contemporary Art.

Later this year, he will debut his first solo exhibition with the gallery. We’re excited to share more soon!
