(The English version is below)

A Particularly Moving Moment on the Journey Toward My New Book
There are moments in the long process of writing a book when research, archives, documents, and writing suddenly meet the world of art — and for me, this is one of the most moving moments of all.
My friend, the renowned Israeli artist David (Dudu) Gerstein — a sculptor, painter, and illustrator whose colorful, imaginative, and vibrant works have been exhibited in Israel and around the world — agreed to give me a truly special gift: to create, according to the guidelines I gave him, the central image for the cover of my new book, Meir Dizengoff: The Man and His City, which will soon be published by Pardes Publishing House.
Over the past few weeks, Dudu worked on the painting, and after several attempts and versions, the final work was created — the very painting I am holding in the photograph: Meir Dizengoff riding his horse against the backdrop of Tel Aviv’s old City Hall.
For me, as a historian who has devoted many years to researching Dizengoff and the history of Tel Aviv, it was especially moving to see historical research suddenly come to life through color, line, imagination, and artistic sensitivity.
I was delighted that the publisher at Pardes also greatly appreciated the result. The artwork is now being transferred to the publishing house, where the final design of the book cover will be created, including the title and the other graphic elements.
On Thursday, July 9, I visited Dudu at his impressive studio in the Har Tuv industrial area near Beit Shemesh. It is difficult to describe the place in words: a magnificent space, almost a museum in its own right, filled with colorful, surprising, and inspiring works of art. It is certainly a place worth visiting, both for individuals and groups.
To my great excitement, Dudu also wrote a personal dedication to me on the back of the painting. He created the work in watercolor — a choice that, as he explained, was intended to reflect the spirit of the period and the atmosphere of old Tel Aviv.
And, of course, we could not part without taking a photograph together, with the painting between us — a work that has already become, for me, far more than merely a book cover. It has become part of the story itself.
Thank you, dear Dudu, for your friendship, generosity, talent, and heart.
And now — onward to the final book cover.
