בתמונה נראה אחד מ”בתי החלומות” האופייניים לתל אביב של שנות ה־20. הבית ברחוב אלנבי 54 תוכנן בשנת 1921 על ידי האדריכל אלכסנדר לוי ומאופין ע”י האדריכלות המורית.
רבים מהעולים היהודים באותה תקופה ביקשו מהאדריכלים שלהם להגשים את חלומותיהם האישיים באמצעות אבן וטיח. כך נולדו “בתי החלומות” – מבנים ייחודיים, צבעוניים ומעוטרים, המשקפים שאיפות, זיכרונות ותקוות לעתיד חדש.

סגנון זה שייך לאדריכלות האקלקטית, שהקדימה את אדריכלות הבאוהאוס והעיר הלבנה של תל אביב. גם כיום, יותר ממאה שנים לאחר שנבנו, בתי החלומות ממשיכים לעורר התפעלות ואהבה בקרב תושבי העיר ומבקריה.

🏛️ A Dream in Stone – Tel Aviv in the 1920s

The image shows a typical “Dream House” of 1920s Tel Aviv. Designed in 1921 by architect Alexander Levi, the building on Allenby street 54 is dominated by Moorish architectural elements. It is said that many Jewish immigrants of that era asked their architects to transform their personal dreams into stone. These aspirations gave rise to the so-called “Dream Houses” – richly decorated, colorful, and expressive buildings reflecting hopes, memories, and visions of a new future.

Today, these houses are classified as part of Tel Aviv’s Eclectic architectural style, the predecessor of the city’s famous Bauhaus architecture. More than a century later, the Dream Houses continue to captivate residents and visitors alike with their charm, elegance, and imagination.

The Art Deco Society of New York invites you and your members to join us for a Zoom on Wednesday, July 8th at 6:30 PM New York time, for a look at how Art Deco found a distinctly Filipino voice, with curator Ivan Man Dy.

Ivan Man Dy is the curator of "Art Deco: Design and Modernity in the Philippines, 1925–1950," currently on view at the National Museum of Fine Arts in Manila through October 2026. The exhibition opened in November 2025 to mark the Art Deco Centennial and brings together more than 300 objects from public and private collections across the archipelago.
His richly illustrated talk will explore Deco Filipino, a distinct regional expression of the style shaped by tropical climate, local craft traditions, and a colonial history that made the aesthetic both aspirational and deeply personal and share the decade of research that brought the exhibition to life.
We invite members of all ICADS societies to attend this special Zoom event at the same ADSNY discounted rate for our members. הבאוהאוס אינו רק סגנון האדריכלות המזוהה עם “העיר הלבנה” של תל אביב – הוא השפיע עמוקות גם על תחום העיצוב הגרפי בארץ. בתמונה מוצגים ארבעה פוסטרים מוקדמים משנות ה־30 ועד שנות ה-50 של האחים שמיר, מהמעצבים הגרפיים המשפיעים ביותר שפעלו בארץ ישראל ולאחר מכן בישראל, מאמצע שנות ה־30 ועד אמצע שנות ה־90.

Bauhaus is not only the architectural language that defines Tel Aviv’s White City—it also played a major role in shaping modern graphic design in Palestine and later Israel. The image shows four posters from the 1930s until the 1950s by Shamir Brothers, among the most influential graphic designers active from the mid-1930s through the mid-1990s.

משתתפים בצער המשפחה. היה לנו הכבוד להציג תערוכה מרתקת שבה גודוביץ הציע להעביר את המשחקים האולימפיים שמתקיימים כל 4 שנים באופן קבוע לחצי האי סיני. רעיון טיפוסי לגודוביץ, חשיבה מחוץ לקופסא. משחקים אולימפיים מסתיימים לרוב בהפסדים ענקיים ומכבידים על המארגנים שנים ארוכות, פיתוח בינלאומי בחצי האי סיני היה יכול לתרום לפיתוח ושלום באיזורינו. הרעיון אף הוצג ונידון באירגון האולימפי הבינלאומי שיושב בעיר לוזאן שבשווייץ. - איש מיוחד, מוכשר ואופטימי הלך לעולמו.

האם זהו סופו המתקרב של מורשת הבאוהאוס —
או דווקא ההוכחה לכך שהיא עדיין חיה, נושמת ומשתנה יחד עם העיר?
בין קווי הטיח המתקלף והתיקונים המקומיים, בין סינר הצללה אופקי ופונקציונלי לבין המרפסת שעליה גרפיטי צבעוני ועכשווי — המבנה הזה מספר את סיפור תל אביבי.
לא מוזיאון קפוא בזמן, אלא אדריכלות מודרניסטית שעדיין מאוכלסת, מוקפת צמחייה ים־תיכונית שופעת, שמיים כחולים, וחיי רחוב משתנים ללא הרף.
אולי דווקא המתח בין שימור, הזנחה, חיים יומיומיים ואמנות רחוב — הוא מה שהופך את הבאוהאוס של תל אביב לכל כך חי ורלוונטי גם היום.י

Is this the beginning of the end for Bauhaus heritage —
or perhaps proof that this architecture is still alive and evolving with the city?

Between weathered plaster and partial renovations, beneath the functional horizontal sunbreakers, and beside a balcony transformed into a colorful graffiti canvas, this building tells the real story of Tel Aviv.

לפני שווילהלם זאב הלר פעל בתל אביב כמודרניסט “בארוקי”, כפי שראינו בפוסט הקודם, הוא היה אדריכל מצליח בגרמניה.
בליל הפוגרומים של 9–10 בנובמבר 1938 נפלו קורבן בלייפציג גם אולם הטהרה והמבנים מסביב שתכנן הלר בשנים 1926–1928 עבור בית העלמין היהודי החדש. המבנה בסגנון אר־דקו , היה מן היצירות המרשימות של האדריכלות היהודית המודרנית בגרמניה של אותה תקופה.

בציניות אכזרית דרשה העירייה הנאצית כבר למחרת ההרס מן הקהילה היהודית לפנות את השרידים, בטענה שהם “מסכנים את ביטחון הציבור” ו”מכערים” את הסביבה.

הצלומים בשחור־לבן מראים את החורבות לאחר ההרס, ובהמשך את המבנים בשלמותם — מבחוץ ומבפנים — לפני שנחרבו.
דווקא בימים שבהם האנטישמיות שוב מתפשטת בעולם, חשוב לזכור שגם תרבות, אדריכלות וזיכרון היו מטרה לשנאה ולהרס.

Before Wilhelm Ze’ev Haller became the “Baroque” modernist of Tel Aviv, as seen in our previous post, he was already a successful architect in Germany.
During the anti-Jewish pogroms of November 9–10, 1938, the ceremonial hall and adjoining buildings he designed between 1926–1928 for Leipzig’s New Jewish Cemetery were also destroyed. The complex was a remarkable example of modern Art Deco sacred architecture.

With cruel cynicism, the N**i city authorities demanded already the following day that the Jewish community remove the ruins, claiming they endangered “public safety” and disfigured the city.

The black-and-white photographs first show the burned ruins after the destruction, followed by views of the intact building — exterior and interior — before it was lost.
Especially today, as antisemitism is once again spreading worldwide, these images remind us that culture, architecture, and memory themselves became targets of hatred and destruction.

המרפסות המעוגלות של בית בועז־שוואבה ברחוב שטראוס 3 בתל אביב יוצרות חזית אסימטרית, אלגנטית ומלאת תנועה — דוגמה ייחודית לאדריכלות המודרניסטית של שנות ה־30 בעיר הלבנה.

הבניין תוכנן בשנים 1935–1936 על ידי האדריכל וילהלם זאב הלר, שנאלץ לעזוב את גרמניה לאחר עליית הנאצים לשלטון בשנת 1933. מבקרי אדריכלות תיארו את עבודותיו בתל אביב כ״הבארוק של הסגנון הבינלאומי המקומי״ — שילוב מסקרן בין מינימליזם מודרניסטי לבין קווים עשירים וזורמים.

מתוך תשעה מבנים שתכנן הלר בתל אביב, חמישה זכו למעמד של שימור.



The curved balconies of the Boaz–Schwabe House at 3 Strauss Street in Tel Aviv create an elegant asymmetrical façade full of movement — a distinctive example of the city’s 1930s modernist architecture.

The building was designed in 1935–36 by architect Wilhelm Zeev Haller, who was forced to leave Germany following the N**i rise to power in 1933. Architecture critics have described his Tel Aviv works as “the Baroque of the local International Style” — referring to the richness and fluidity he brought into otherwise minimalist modernist designs.

Of the nine Bauhaus buildings Haller designed in Tel Aviv, five are now protected heritage sites.
