In this series of ink drawings, architect and artist Talya Ben-Ari captures the essence of Tel Aviv’s Bauhaus buildings through clear, precise lines — their composition, proportions, and deliberate lack of ornament.

In her drawings, the buildings become almost sculptural: distilled expressions of Tel Aviv Modernism.

🚦 Traffic jams in Tel Aviv? Nothing new! 😄

Apparently, Tel Aviv’s traffic problems have deep historical roots — this photograph proves it! 🚌🐎🚲

This nostalgic 50×70 cm black-and-white poster is part of a collection of dozens of vintage Tel Aviv posters, currently available at the Bauhaus Center for only 110 NIS instead of 235 NIS.

מה הקשר בין אסימטריה לאדריכלות דמוקרטית?

הבניין ברחוב שפר 22 בתל אביב, שנבנה בשנת 1938 בתכנונו של האדריכל בן־עמי שולמן, מציע תשובה מעניינת.

ארבע קומות, חלונות ברזל גדולים, פסי חלונות אופקיים ופינות מעוגלות יוצרים יחד קומפוזיציה מודרניסטית אלגנטית – אבל דווקא האסימטריה היא שהופכת את הבניין למיוחד.

אפשר לראות באסימטריה הזו ביטוי לרוח הדמוקרטית של התקופה: אדריכלות שאינה כפופה לסדר, לסימטריה ולמונומנטליות של העבר.

זה היה רגע היסטורי מרתק. בשעה שבאירופה הפשיסטית וברוסיה הקומוניסטית האדריכלות הרשמית חזרה לצורות קלאסיות, סימטריות ומונומנטליות, תל אביב הצעירה אימצה אדריכלות חדשה – פשוטה, פונקציונלית וחופשית יותר.

בשנת 2020 שופץ הבניין בתכנונם של האדריכלים אלון ניסים, טל חייאם וטל אייל, תוך שמירה על אופיו המקורי.

What does asymmetry have to do with democracy?

The answer can be found in a remarkable building at 22 Shefer Street, Tel Aviv.

Designed by architect Ben-Ami Shulman and completed in 1938, the four-story commercial building combines large steel-framed windows, horizontal window bands and rounded corners in an elegant modernist composition.

But it is the building’s asymmetry that makes it particularly intriguing.

Asymmetry can be interpreted as an architectural expression of the democratic spirit of the interwar period – an architecture no longer bound by the rigid order, symmetry and monumentality of the past.

It was a fascinating historical moment. While official architecture in Fascist Europe and Communist Russia was turning back toward classical, symmetrical and monumental forms, young Tel Aviv was embracing a new architectural language: simpler, more functional and freer.

In 2020, the building was renovated by architects Alon Nissim, Tal Hayam and Tal Eyal, preserving its original modernist character.

הפתעה אדריכלית אמיתית מסתתרת ברחוב בלפור 46 בתל אביב.

בית ד”ר חיים שטיין, שתוכנן בשנת 1926 על ידי האדריכל יהודה צוקרמן, נבנה כווילה עירונית חד-קומתית – יצירה קלאסית.

החזית הסימטרית, החלונות המעוטרים בעמודים, המרפסת החצי-עגולה הפונה אל גן ירוק ושופע ומעקות האבן האלגנטיים מעניקים לבית תחושת שלווה. הצמחייה הסובטרופית העשירה מסתירה אותו כמעט לחלוטין, ולכן רגע הגילוי מרשים במיוחד.

לאורך השנים שימש המבנה כנציגות דיפלומטית של טורקיה ובהמשך גם של בלגיה. בשנים 2021–2022 עבר שימור ושיפוץ מוקפד על ידי משרד האדריכלים בר אוריין, שהחזיר לו את יופיו המקורי.

A true architectural surprise is hidden at 46 Balfour Street in Tel Aviv.

Dr. Chaim Stein House was designed in 1926 by architect Yehuda Zuckerman as a one-story urban villa. Its classical design could just as easily belong in one of the great Mediterranean cities.

With its perfectly symmetrical façade, column-framed windows, graceful semi-circular terrace extending into a lush green garden, and elegant balustrades, the villa radiates harmony and refinement. Hidden behind dense subtropical vegetation, it is easy to miss—making the moment of discovery all the more memorable.

Over the years, the house served as the diplomatic mission of Turkey and later Belgium. Between 2021 and 2022, it was carefully restored by the architectural firm Bar Orian, preserving one of Tel Aviv’s most charming architectural gems.

💛 צהוב שאי אפשר להתעלם ממנו.

בית אריה בריל ברחוב שינקין התוסס, בלב תל אביב, נבנה בין השנים 1919–1923 על ידי המהנדס ל. פיינשטיין. כעבור בדיוק 100 שנה שופץ בקפידה על ידי 000architects.

במהלך השימור נוספה קומה חדשה, הנסוגה מחזית הבניין כך שהחזית ההיסטורית ממשיכה להוביל את המראה העירוני. תוספות הבנייה הללו מאפשרות לממן את עבודות השימור – מודל שהפך לנפוץ בתל אביב ויוצר מצב של Win-Win: המבנים ההיסטוריים נשמרים, ובמקביל מתאפשרת התחדשות עירונית רחבת היקף.

התהליך אינו חף ממחלוקות, אך קשה להתעלם מהתרומה שלו להצלת רבים מהמבנים ההיסטוריים של העיר.

💛 A splash of yellow that brightens the city.

The Arieh Brill House on vibrant Sheinkin Street, in the heart of Tel Aviv, was built between 1919 and 1923 by engineer L. Feinstein. Exactly 100 years later, it was carefully renovated by 000architects.

As part of the restoration, a new floor was added, set back from the main façade so the historic street frontage remains the visual focus. These additional floors help finance preservation projects—a model frequently used in Tel Aviv that creates a win-win situation: historic buildings are saved while the city continues to renew itself.

The approach remains controversial, yet it has undoubtedly played a major role in preserving large parts of Tel Aviv’s architectural heritage.

🦁 האריה הכי ידידותי בתל אביב?

בקצה סמטת פלוני מסתתר אחד הפסלים המפתיעים והאהובים בעיר – אריה בטון בגודל טבעי, השומר בשלווה על שורת בתים מקסימה משנות ה־20.

מבט אחד בפניו מספיק כדי להבין שזה לא אריה מאיים. להפך – הבעת פניו הרכה והמחויכת מעניקה לו אופי כמעט אנושי, ומוסיפה קורטוב של הומור ושמחת חיים למרחב העירוני.

הבתים שמקיפים אותו הם חגיגה של האדריכלות האקלקטית המוקדמת של תל אביב: חלונות קשת, מסגרות בגוון צהבהב, טיח לבן, חלונות עץ חומים, מעקות ברזל מעוצבים ואריחי קרמיקה צבעוניים – תקופה שבה כל חזית סיפרה סיפור.

על פי המסורת, הפסל נוצר בידי הפסלים י. ד. גורדון וח. כץ, בהזמנת הקבלן מאיר גזל שפירא, שהקדיש את האריה לאשתו.

בפעם הבאה שאתם מטיילים במרכז תל אביב – אל תמהרו. לפעמים האוצרות היפים ביותר מסתתרים דווקא בסמטאות הקטנות. ✨

🦁 Perhaps the friendliest lion in Tel Aviv?

Hidden at the end of Simtat Ploni stands one of the city’s most delightful surprises—a life-sized concrete lion quietly guarding a picturesque row of 1920s houses.

One look at its face is enough to realize this is no fierce guardian. Its gentle expression gives the sculpture an almost human warmth, bringing humor and joy to this charming urban corner.

The surrounding buildings are wonderful examples of Tel Aviv’s early Eclectic architecture, with graceful arched windows, soft yellow detailing, white plaster façades, brown wooden windows, elegant wrought-iron balconies, and colorful ceramic tiles—a reminder of the city’s rich architectural beginnings.

According to local tradition, the sculpture was created by Y. D. Gordon and H. Katz, commissioned by the builder Meir Gezel Shapira, who is said to have dedicated the lion to his wife.

Next time you explore central Tel Aviv, slow down for a moment. Some of the city’s greatest treasures are hidden in its smallest alleys. ✨
