The spaceship has landed. Perched on an 11-acre campus in Exposition Park, the new Lucas Museum of Narrative Art looks as if it alighted in Los Angeles from a galaxy far, far away. With its futuristic forms and sinuous lines, the project echoes the radical vision of its founders, filmmaker George Lucas and his wife, Mellody Hobson.

The 300,000-square-foot museum, designed by Ma Yansong of MAD with Michael Siegel of Stantec and landscape maestro Mia Lehrer of Studio-MLA, is wrapped in more than 1,500 individually crafted panels of curved fiberglass-reinforced polymer. Dramatic cantilevers convey the illusion that the building floats gently above the site. Inside, millennia of storytelling will sit side by side—from ancient and religious art to comics, illustration, Norman Rockwell, R. Crumb, and a model of the Millennium Falcon.
