To the Members of the Organization of Former Residents of Zduńska Wola in Israel and Around the World,
To Their Families and to the Younger Generations,
As Rosh Hashanah approaches, I have chosen to share with you a photograph of a New Year’s greeting card created in the Theresienstadt Ghetto in 1943.
A “Shanah Tovah” card created in the Theresienstadt Ghetto for Rosh Hashanah 5704, in 1943 a deeply moving testimony to the enduring power of Jewish hope, even in the darkest of times.
*Source: Museum of Jewish Heritage New York.
Even in one of the darkest and most difficult places imaginable, Jews chose to preserve their faith, their traditions and their hope for a better year. This card is far more than a New Year’s greeting. It is a testimony to the strength of the Jewish people, to their devotion to life and to a spirit that their enemies could never destroy.
As we welcome the Jewish year 5787, I wish all of you and your families, in Israel and throughout the world, a happy and blessed New Year a year of health, security, peace, unity and good news.
Rosh Hashanah is a time for reflection, renewal and hope. For us, it is also a time to remember the great responsibility entrusted to us.
We have been given a sacred mission: to preserve the memory and heritage of the once-thriving Jewish community of Zduńska Wola; to tell the story of its rich Jewish life its families and children, schools and houses of study, youth movements, craftsmen, customs and traditions and to remember the entire world that was brutally destroyed in the Holocaust.
We must remember and teach not only what happened, but also to whom it happened.
Behind the numbers were human beings. They had names and faces, families and dreams, faith and hope. It is our duty to preserve their names, tell their stories and ensure that they never become anonymous figures in the pages of history.
This responsibility does not rest solely upon the first and second generations. We must pass the torch of remembrance to our children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The younger generations must carry this sacred mission forward: to learn, ask questions, research, document and tell the story so that the memory and heritage will endure even when no eyewitnesses remain to speak in their own voices.
Today, as antisemitism once again raises its head in Israel and around the world, hatred of Jews continues to grow, and history once again presents us with grave and alarming warning signs, our mission has become more urgent and more important than ever.
We must not remain silent.
We must not forget.
We must not allow anyone to distort the truth, erase the past or consign the names of our community members to oblivion.
Remembrance is not only about looking back. It is a commitment in the present and a warning for the future. It is our responsibility to those who were murdered, to the survivors and to all the generations that will follow us.
Together, we will continue to research, document, commemorate and make the voice of the Jewish community of Zduńska Wola heard. We will preserve its names, stories and heritage, passing them from generation to generation.
Just as the greeting card created in Theresienstadt carried a spark of hope within the darkness, so too shall we carry remembrance alongside hope and continue to believe in the strength of life, the resilience of the Jewish people and the future of the State of Israel.
May the New Year bring security and tranquility to the Jewish people and the State of Israel, the safe return home of all our brothers and sisters, healing to the wounded, comfort to the bereaved families, and days of unity, hope and peace.
Shanah Tovah U’Metukah
May it be a year of health, security, meaningful action, remembrance and hope.
With warmest wishes,
Zvi Chanoch Stern
