Artist Portrait | Introducing the artists participating in the exhibition So Let Us Now Begin at the Beginning 💡

Yael Burstein’s sculptures are currently on view as part of the exhibition, and can be visited during our opening hours:
Thursday 13:00–19:00
Friday 10:00–14:00

Yael Burstein, born in Israel in 1974, is an artist who lives and works in Jaffa. Working across collage, drawing, sculpture, and installation, Burstein’s practice is based on the collection and transformation of images from various sources. Through processes of cutting, enlarging, and transferring images into space, she creates works that move between two-dimensional composition and sculptural installation, often functioning as a form of drawing in space.

Her work explores the relationship between mental and physical spaces, drawing on imagery of empty domestic interiors, natural landscapes, and ethnic and tribal masks. These elements are reconfigured into photographic collages, two-dimensional sculptural works, and wallpaper installations that merge with the walls of the exhibition space.

Selected solo exhibitions include Herzliya Museum of Contemporary Art and Tel Aviv Museum of Art, as well as galleries in Israel and France. Group exhibitions include the Kupferman Collection, Kibbutz Lohamei Haghetaot; The Israel Museum, Jerusalem; Inga Gallery, Tel Aviv; and Tel Aviv Museum of Art. Her works have also been presented at international fairs and festivals including Paris Photo, Les Rencontres d’Arles, and Untitled Miami, and are held in public and private collections in Israel and internationally.

Christian Boltanski, born in 1944 in Paris, France, was a French artist who lived and worked in Paris until his death in 2021. Boltanski is considered one of the most important conceptual and installation artists of his generation, working across sculpture, photography, painting, film, installation, and theatre.

His work explored memory, absence, death, and collective history, often using everyday materials such as photographs, clothing, lighting fixtures, and sound as traces of human presence.

Boltanski had a long and significant relationship with Magasin III Museum for Contemporary Art and the Robert Weil Family Foundation. His works are included in the collection and were presented at Magasin III in several exhibitions over the years, including Les archives, I’m Still Here, and In the Eye of the Beholder.

His solo exhibition Les archives, presented at Magasin III in 2008 and curated by Tessa Praun, marked the starting point for Les Archives du Cœur - the heartbeat archive that was later permanently housed on Teshima Island, Japan.

Ahead of the exhibition opening in a week, which will present a selection of works from the MAGASIN III collection alongside works by local artists, we are taking the opportunity to share a bit more about the background, contexts, and values that guide the collection.

במסגרת שרשור ההמלצות של מדור ׳מה קורא?׳ סאהר מיעארי בוחר להמליץ על ספר האמן Selfie של אשרף פואח׳רי.

הספר נוצר בעקבות תערוכת היחיד של פואח׳רי בשנת 2017, ומציג אובייקטים קטנים שאסף לאורך השנים - כמעין עדויות לנוכחותו במקומות שונים. דרך האוסף האישי נפתחות שאלות על זיכרון, תיעוד עצמי, והאופן שבו חפצים יכולים לספר סיפור.

Reading List | Saher Miari recommends Selfie by Ashraf Fawakhry

As part of the Reading List recommendation chain, Saher Miari has chosen to recommend Ashraf Fawakhry’s artist book Selfie.

Created following Fawakhry’s 2017 solo exhibition, the book presents small objects he collected over the years- traces of his presence in different places. Through this personal collection, questions emerge around memory, self-documentation, and the ways objects can tell a story.

In two weeks, Ashraf Fawakhry will close the chain with his own recommendation. What’s your favorite artist book?
