ANTIQUITIES ROADSHOW
with Thomas Desmond

Heritage Week event in Reginald's Tower.
FREE talk & assessment of artefacts on Tuesday, 18th of August 2026 at 1pm to 3pm.

Tommy Desmond started in Archaeology in 1990 on the Viking excavations in Arundel Square under the tutorage of Senior Archaeologists, Maurice Hurley & Orla Scully. He took part in all of the excavations in Waterford City, from Penney's to the site of the Medieval Museum, where, in 2010, they uncovered evidence that dated Waterford as Ireland's oldest Viking City. Tommy also worked on numerous excavations in Dungarvan Castle as well as in Barryscourt Castle outside Middleton. He monitored excavations all over the South East and beyond. Tommy's main interests are prehistoric archaeology and flint tools, but he is also an accomplished poet and passionate advocate for the protection of animals and the environment.
He reckons over 35 years he has seen more of Waterford's history from prehistoric all the way through to modern times than any other Waterford person, and he still enjoys discovering more.

Booking is advised but walk-ins are welcome on the day as long as seats are available. Feel free to pop in just for Tommy's fascinating talk. There's no obligation to bring artefacts or stay for the entire event. Access to the event is by stone spiral staircase only!
