The only white guy at the party! Sean was in London recently and happened upon the Tamil Hindu Chariot Festival in West Ealing…

”I would describe myself as spiritual but I’m not religious in any way. I was also aware that I was literally the only white person at the entire event. Despite this I was made to feel very welcome, being offered food throughout and in the end I was given a coconut! It was a very beautiful and moving event”.

The annual celebration features a spectacular parade with large decorated chariots, traditional music, and up to 50,000 pilgrims in vibrant traditional dress. The event (Ther Thiruvila) is organised by the Ealing Sri Kanaga Thurkkai Amman Temple.

“I lived around the corner on Drayton Road for the first few years of my life and so I was retracing childhood memories when I literally stumbled upon the event at Dean Gardens and the surrounding streets. A real joy to witness such a vibrant celebration of culture, tradition and faith and to feel so included in such a genuine and respectful way. Mikka Nandri (மிக்க நன்றி)”.
