Uillinn: West Cork Arts Centre is a hub of arts activity right in the heart of Skibbereen. After 30 years in our former North Street home, our move to a new purpose-built building in 2015 has increased opportunities for access to, and engagement with, the arts for locals and visitors alike. Our two main galleries house contemporary art exhibitions that intrigue and inspire, presenting artwork by l

ocal, national and international artists. The three Artists' Studios provide space for Irish and international artists to work on site and to meet the public, and the Dance Residency brings top-class contemporary dancers, choreographers, performers and musicians to Uillinn to develop new work and present it to the public throughout the year. The vibrant and diverse participation programme enriches the visitor experience through workshops, masterclasses, film screenings, and dance and discussion platforms. Entrance to the exhibitions is free, and many of our activities and events are also free of charge. Tomorrow, Saturday 30 May at 1.30pm, current dance artist in residence at Uillinn Alex Ayvazova will share her work Anseo. This is free to attend with no booking necessary, just arrive 5 minutes prior to start time.
Anseo is a solo dance work blending breaking, hip-hop,waacking and contemporary movement to explore identity, belonging and the tension between who we are and
who the world expects us to be.
Led by my free-spirited 7-year-old inner child named Oisín, the piece follows a hero’s journey between the real and mythical — drawing on folklore, instinct and mischief to ask: what if finding yourself means going back, not forward?
Part performance, part conversation, Anseo invites the audience into something collective, unpredictable and alive.

Pain Portraits explores the lives of seven young people aged 11 to 29 who are living with arthritis and other chronic illnesses.

The film touches on the physical, emotional and social side of living with the various conditions the contributors have, from not being believed by teachers to having to leave lifelong passions behind. The film takes a poetic and visually driven approach, bringing together portraiture, body movement, still life and archival material with personal interviews. These elements are woven into a short film that moves between the physical and emotional, creating a layered and intimate portrait of each contributor.

This week we bid farewell to Julie Merriman. Julie was awarded the Cork County Council/Bealtaine Uillinn Artist in Residence Award 2026. She spent the month of May in studio 2, investigating new print and bookmaking techniques.

Celebrating Poetry Day Ireland with a Menu of Poems!
Call in to Uillinn and find a menu of poems to read, they are dotted throughout the building. Today, Thursday 28 May, is Poetry Day Ireland.
Selected this year by poet Anne Tannam.
A Menu of Poems will be shared with patients, staff, and visitors across Irish hospitals and healthcare settings. Circulated on meal trays, the initiative offers moments of comfort and reflection, reaching over 12,000 people as part of an all-island celebration of poetry.
Launched in 2008, Menu of Poems is an annual poetry anthology that Arts for Health, West Cork has proudly taken part in for more than 15 years. Produced by Arts and Health Coordinators Ireland, with Saolta Arts as the lead organisation and support from Poetry Ireland and HSE Health Promotion and Improvement, the initiative brings meaningful artistic encounters into healthcare settings across the country. Each year, the curated Menu of Poems enriches healthcare settings nationwide by offering patients, staff, and visitors a meaningful encounter with the arts.

Pain Portraits by Étáin Nash explores the lives of seven young people aged 11 to 29 who are living with arthritis and other chronic illnesses. They include Becky, a 29-year-old ballet dancer on the brink of her final performances; Evie, a 16-year-old theatre enthusiast with big dreams of being an actor, and Abbie, an 11-year-old girl who loves baking, sports and spending time with her family.

Director Étáin Nash says, “Pain Portraits is deeply personal to me. I have lived with chronic pain since childhood due to a type of Arthritis called Ankylosing Spondylitis. Due to a lack of understanding, both socially and within the healthcare system, I wasn’t diagnosed until I was 21, over a decade after my symptoms started. Arthritis, pain and chronic illness in young people is extremely misunderstood and dismissed and I wanted to share different perspectives of young people through an artistic and human centred lens.”

Pain Portraits is supported by the Arts Council’s Arts and Disability Connect Scheme managed by Arts & Disability Ireland.

Accessibility: West Cork Arts Centre is a wheelchair accessible venue. Their galleries and The UCC and Bollinger Family Space are fitted with a Hearing Induction Loop System. There is high contrast and braille signage, and accessible gender-neutral bathrooms on each level.
