Losty & Found!
We were contacted by a collector in Colorado who happened to purchase at auction an antique needlework piece created by a 14 year old Caragh girl named Mary Losty.
The needlework dates to *September 1835*.
Mary completed the detailed craftwork in the old Caragh National School (originally established in 1832). Apparently, the text on the needlework sampler was a commonly used quote stitched by young girls in the early 19th century.
If anyone has any information on Mary Losty, please get in touch!
The needlework piece reads:
"Industry taught in early days, / not only gives the teacher praise /
But gives us pleasure when we view / the works that innocence can do / The parent with exulting joy / surveys it as no trifling toy.
