Very sad to learn of the sudden passing of Maureen Kelleher - Maureen was part of the 2025 phase of our project, where we recorded the experiences of women working in Leitrim factories in the recent past. Maureen had been the secretary at Ballinamore Textiles, and she shared her memories from that time with us, which were also digitally recorded as part of the project archive.

From secretly using the the factory sewing machines to sew her wedding dress (and getting caught by the boss!), being brought around Ballinamore on the back of a trailer by other factory workers to celebrate her leaving to get married, to being asked some shocking questions in her recruitment interview - Maureen was warm, entertaining, and very generous with her time with us when we recorded her memories. We were very grateful to her for being such a great addition to our project, and for allowing us to record her experiences, which told us so much about women's working lives in Leitrim. Our deepest sympathies go out to all of her family and her friends.

We were very sad today to hear of the passing of Mary Fox (née Lee), who had recently celebrated her 101st birthday. Mary had engaged with our project and with WCI - North Leitrim Women's Centre on a number of occasions, and had particularly shared her experiences of working in the Western Button Factory in Manorhamilton during its heyday. She was a warm and lovely woman with important stories and contributions to share, and over the years spoke to many researchers and local historians to give insight into local women's lives. We are privileged to have had the chance to share in her stories and experiences. Our deepest sympathies go out to all of her family and her many friends.

A campaign has seen an outpouring of support from individuals, knitting groups, and community organisations, all contributing their time and talent to craft hats, scarves, mittens, and small toys.

A lovely clip on lace making - Clones lace was the lace type mostly made in Leitrim, but Carrickmacross lace was also a style created in the county.
