in 1805..
Horatio Nelson died at the Battle of Trafalgar. By his side when he passed was Limerick man Walter Burke who acted as Purser on board the HMS Victory. Walter Burke also had at least three sons who died while serving in the navy.

Today in 1888.. Con Colbert was born in Castlemahon, County Limerick. On 8 May 1916, for his part in the 1916 Easter Rising, Con was shot by firing squad in Kilmainham Gaol, Dublin. Colbert Station, Limerick is named after him.

The 3 time elected Mayor of John Daly was born. John was uncle to Ned Daly and uncle-in-law to Thomas Clarke. Both executed for their roles in the 1916 Rising.

Today in 1783.. Edmund Sexton Pery is unanimously re-elected as Speaker of the Irish Parliament. Considered one of the most powerful politicians in Ireland at the time, Pery’s Square in Limerick City was named in honour of him.

Limerick Museum is delighted to announce that due to popular demand our 'Specimens of Change' natural history exhibition has been extended until December 31st 2026.

This exhibition, curated by Dr Zara Power, Assistant Curator at Limerick Museum, invites the public to engage with our rarely seen natural history collections. Our collection is diverse and includes examples of palaeontology, zoology, oology, entomology, and botany in the form of an important herbarium amassed by the renowned Limerick botanist Charlotte O'Brien of Mount Trenchard, Foynes, Co. Limerick.

This exhibit is made possible thanks to funding from The Heritage Council

in 1859.. First Draft of the Resolutions Adopted at a meeting on Wed 12th Oct 1859, re "Restoration of St. Mary's Cathedral" Includes: John Long to be Hon Sec., and 460 pounds (approx. €70,000 today) gathered to be used for new roof.
