Sarsfield Barracks Museum is located in Sarsfield army barracks in the heart of limerick city and is dedicated to the research, education and preservation of the military history of limerick in general and Sarsfield Barracks in particular.
The Barracks officially opened in 1795 at the hight of the French Revolution and since that time has seen more than 200 years of continuous military occupancy. In this long period the barracks and its occupants became an integral part of the culture of Limerick city and county.
Throughout the 19th century the barracks served as a major recruitment hub for the British army and saw soldiers from Limerick involved in every major campaign of the British army from the Napoleonic period, the Crimean war and eventually World War one and independence. Before becoming a dramatic focal point for the civil war in Limerick.
Today the barracks is still an active military installation serving as the home of the 12th inf bn who themselves have a proud history associated with Limerick.
