Newmills Corn and Flax Mills

Newmills Corn and Flax Mills The visitor to Newmills can experience the pleasure of seeing one of the largest waterwheels in Ireland in action as it drives the machinery of the corn mill.

The oldest surviving building here is said to be 400 years old. Indeed, the whole complex is an interesting reminder of a stage in the industrial development of this country which has now given way to a more sophisticated, but usually far less fascinating technology. Location: 5km outside Letterkenny off Churchill Road. Guided Tours: Available on request; Max. No: 15-20; Duration: 45 minutes

Lá Fhéile Bríde / Saint Brigid's Day

Welcoming Imbolc – the first signs of spring
Imbolc marks a turning point in the Irish year — a time traditionally associated with renewal, light and the promise of spring. Celebrated from 1 February, it reflects our long-standing connection with the land, seasonal change and the natural world.

Across Ireland, the OPW cares for historic places and landscapes that have witnessed centuries of seasonal traditions like Imbolc, reminding us how deeply rooted these moments are in our shared heritage.

As the days slowly lengthen, we wish everyone a peaceful and hopeful Imbolc.
