Kiltyclogher Heritage Centre & Sean MacDiarmada Homestead An interpretative centre and small museum housing an exhibition of 1916 Hero

The Heritage Centre houses an exhibition about 1916 Proclamation signatory Sean McDermott or Seán MacDiarmada as he was later known. The exhibition contains an audio-visual facility and interpretive panels, providing visitors with information about him, as well as the history of the locality. The Heritage Centre itself is located in the former courthouse building and has been developed with Peace

III funding administered by Leitrim County Council. The main aims of the centre are to welcome visitors to Kiltyclogher, and provide information about the history of the village with a particular focus on the Seán MacDiarmada legacy. The family cottage where MacDiarmada was born and raised is in Corranmore a few kilometres outside the village. This is maintained in its original condition as a National Monument by the OPW and may be visited by prior arrangement.

A big shout out to Bernadette O Brian ( pictured front right) from New York who recently booked a tour of the Mac Diarmada Homestead for her aunt Agnes Chandler and herself. Bernadette who has strong Kiltyclogher and Cashel connections is a very loyal supporter of the Heritage Centre and the Mac Diarmada Homestead, always calling in for a chat when she is back on holiday and also a great supporter and sharer of our page.

As Bernadette and Agnes both have a great knowledge of and interest in local history and Irish history in general it was a very interesting tour. It was a really busy day and we were joined by visitors from the US, the UK and all over Irealand from Gortlettre to Letterkenny. Aside from the formal tour we all had a lovely chat and a great a bit of craic.

Bernadette, Agnes, and all pictured thank you for your visit and a most enjoyable and sociable tour.

The New York Leitrim Society Banner is getting a lot of interest and it has added an extra focal point to the Seán Mac Diarmada experience. It's nearly 100 yrs old and we are really proud to have it housed in our centre.
Bob and Anne Kennedy,Ballyshannon with their friend John McSharry, Sligo stand proudly beside this unique piece of history.

Denis Keaney (Blondie John's brother)originally from The Rock Corracloona Kiltyclogher was brought on a birthday visit to Seán MacDiarmada"s cottage by his family now living in Portsmouth and what Denis could tell you was astonishing.From how his father thought him to fish with a lemonade bottle and a frog to stories of turf going missing on people (it wasn't the Faeries)to every single character that had lived in
these cottages that are spread across the beautiful townlands of Kiltyclogher.
It's a real Keaney weekend this weekend and fair play to his daughter Tara for booking the tour. A strong proud Irish family indeed.
I really enjoyed all the stories and the 2 grandchildren Reagan & Lordess were a real treat to listen to.
It's busy times and we are delighted with all who book us We are so grateful for people who take the children with them too.Its a real nice tour for a family day out so thank you very much Denis and have a wonderful Birthday🇮🇪🇮🇪🇮🇪

Just had a really lovely tour with Croia Keaney accompanied by her Granny and grand dad Rose Ella and John. A delightfull bright little girl, Croia had some really great questions about the cottage and the Mc Dermott family and like all children we have on tour she was amazed to learn how people lived so long ago. No elctricity, no WiFi, collecting water from the well. While Croia didn't think she would like to sleep in the settle bed, she loved the loft room where Seàn's parents slept. Also we were able to see Anthony doing an expert job thatching the byre.

Croia, John and Rose Ella, thank you for your visit. I really enjoyed having you all on tour.

Pictured here are father and son Seamus and James Connolly who I was delighted to have on tour at the Mac Diarmada Homestead recently. Both have a great interest in and knowledge of Irish history so we had a lovely chat about Seàn Mac Diarmada and the backgound to the 1916 rising and James had some really good, thought provoking questions and observations.

As Seamus was a former tour guide in Parks Castle we also had a chat about the orginal owners the O Rourkes of Breffni and loads of general history in the North Leitrim area, including a very interesting account of Seamus's family business, the Crown Bar in Castle Street, Manorhamilton. An iconic premises that that I know many people recall with great nostalgia. Seamus explained that the name derived from the orginal owners who's sur name was the Crown rather than deference to royalty.

Just had a really nice tour with Shelia Harkin from Killargue and family friend Padraig from Carlow. Shelia, orginally from the UK, is now most definitely an adopted Leitrim woman, having lived here since 1980 when she and her husband Jimmy a killargue native relocated from the UK.

We had a discussion on the life of Seàn Mac Diarmada, particulary the ruthless evictions that took place in Kiltyclogher in 1881 carried out by the local landlord Arthur Loftus Tottenham just two years prior to Seàn's birth in 1883. The harrowing accounts of these evictions would subsequently be instrumental in his decision very early in life to be part of a movement for Irish Independence.

Aside from the history we also had a lovely chat.
Shelia and Padraig, it was great to meet you both and thank you for your visit.

These 2 families are only the fourth tour from Italy I've had in the last ten years .
A great time chatting about Irish history and our path to this current model of modern Ireland.
It was great to hear how much they knew about Irish history and they made many comparisons between ourselves and the Scotch so it was great to inform them about all of Seáns cousins that travel to the cottage from Scotland. Every year.They loved Seáns life story and his role in Irish history. We also had great fun with the kids too and its always a fun tour when kids are involved.
The families are life long friends and staying at St Angela's college.
One familys from Rome and the other from Sicilly.
On the bottom left The McTiernans, County Cork and the Bronx New York USA , they would have seen that Banner many times.being paraded on St.Patricks Day .By the way Brida McTiernan
is a sister of Director, Columnist and Politician Eoin Harris.
Below right is the Breffni now Wheelers Co.Cavan staying at Clancys of Glenfarne.I wonder is there a pub open they said.Slán agus tar ar ais arís.
