The Lettermullen and Gorumna Heritage Centre is located in the heart of the Connemara Gaeltacht in the Islands region of Lettermullen. The Heritage Centre was opened in June 2009 and local people as well as visitors from near and far have shown a huge interest in the private collection of John Conneely on display here. It is a very varied collection ranging from a wonderful photographic archive to a publications library to a collection of old tools and instruments used in forging, farming, carpentry and cooking. It is well worth the visit back to us to see the collection for yourself and Huston’s Beach is only a stone’s throw away from the centre and the Lloyd’s Tower on Golam Head is a short scenic walk from the centre.

The Great Men of the Sea...

GRMA, many thanks to Áine Ní Chonghaile for agreeing to share this photo with us, which is also shared on a really wonderful website and project which Áine has created called Na hOileáin.

Na hOileáin the website of The Islands in southwest Connemara. Travelling from Bealadangan into Lettermore and on to Lettermullan brings you through the area traditionally known as The Islands, and now regularly referred to in Irish as Ceantar na nOileán.

The object of the site is to record the names of the families who lived in the area as far back as we can ascertain. The year 1960 is used as an anchor date – identifying the people who resided in the houses that particular year and in preceding years. Each household has been asked to contribute their own family information which can be revised on request on an on-going basis.

They welcome contributions from family members, descendants, neighbours and all who can add to the store of knowledge about this wonderful community who survived through hard work, grit, perseverance and sheer bloody-mindedness.
