Between Surface and Memory

From 15 to 24 May, KAVA - Kinvara Area Visual Arts presents a joint exhibition by Pat O'Connor, CEKraemer and Jessie O'Connor at the KAVA Gallery in Kinvara, Co. Galway. The exhibition brings together painting, sculpture, and textile work, with each artist responding in a different way to material, texture and landscape.
Pat O'Connor, based in Kinvara, is a painter and sculptor. Originally from Millstreet, Co. Cork, he spent many of his formative years on Sherkin Island and the Beara Peninsula, experiences that continue to shape his work. Alongside his artistic practice, he worked for many years as a psychotherapist, an experience that has influenced the often abstract representation and emotional expression of faces and human presence in his sculptures. Working with timber, stone and other natural materials, his sculptures move between abstraction and figurative expression, reflecting gesture, emotion and the physical relationship between people and landscape.

Jessie O'Connor (JesSea Designs) creates contemporary handmade tufted art pieces using pure wool, chosen for its rich texture and natural quality. Inspired by the landscapes, sunsets, and natural beauty of The Burren and the Irish countryside, each piece combines tactile texture with a modern colour-pop aesthetic. Designed to add warmth, softness, and texture to contemporary spaces, every artwork is carefully created as a unique expression of nature and contemporary design.

CEKraemer is a German-born visual artist, photographer and author based in East Clare. His recent work combines digital image work with painterly and graphical elements. Working within the concept of “massurealism”, he creates layered visual narratives shaped by digital transformation, texture and fragmented perception. Recent projects exploring this approach have been presented through exhibitions and artist talks, including at Croí Nua in Galway. He has exhibited in Ireland and internationally.

The exhibition opens on Friday, 15 May at 19:00 h and continues until 24 May at the KAVA Gallery, The Courthouse, Kinvara, Co. Galway.

Cinn Mhara Memories of days long gone by…

A fine looking Púcán moored up at the Quay in Kinvara in 1935. A fine looking motor vehicle also, possibly a Model A Ford?

The following information is with thanks to Nell Cosgrove who shared her memories with us.

The first house belonged to Mattie Winkle he used to fix bicycles there. So back then you could buy a second hand bike in Kinvara. The yard inside the high wall was Flatley's.

What is now The Pier Head was Nurse Brady's house . She was the district nurse then and used cycle her bike to all her patients and the birth of many babies. Her son lived there with her. Who remembers or ever heard of the wet and dry batteries for the radio well he was the one who worked on them. Many years later Paddy the tailor set up shop there.

Martina Keane added "Before nurse Brady's it was a hotel owned by a Miss Agnes Flatley my Uncle Patch used to tell us stories about it. He and Christy Greene The Quay used to do odd jobs for her. A lot of funny stories were told by him of their time there."

Update, I was just informed of the very sad news that Nell Cosgrove who kindly shared her memories and stories with me about this photo 8 years ago, has passed two years ago (RIP).

I would like to offer our thoughts and prayers tonight for Nell's soul and also to her son Michael who contacted us and the rest of the family. This post is now in Nell Cosgrove's memory. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a hanam.
