A phone call today from a gentleman about postcards lead to a fascinating wider family and social history conversation. Much of it unknown. This postcard is of Flesk Castle near Killarney, owned by a John Coltsmann. His daughter Mary Teresa married William Duncan Godfrey of Kilecolman House, Miltown in 1820s. Their story is for another day and another person to tell but this postcard by Anthony early 1900s gives a fine view of one of the first Catholic houses built in Kerry from where Mary came.

I've had this postcard of Rossbeigh Beach a while. Posted in 1904 the postcard was 'made' before the year 1902. It is in Irish (unusual at the time) and must have been made locally. Unusually it is of a corner of the beach with what seems to be a man and horse with seaweed Most cards at the time were romanticised for tourists. Not this one. The message was written in French, posted from Glenbeigh to France. It refers to the place being beautiful, sublime and wild. The writer stayed in a tourist hotel whose owner was an aunt of the writer's "little"wife. Fascinating piece of culture and history on Rossbeigh.

People buy old postcards for all kinds of reasons. But always of meaning to them. Today, map and geology postcards were bought as well as humour, harbours, political, area of origin and of course romance. A lovely couple were so excited to buy a very clear photographic 100 year old card of a cliff where they got engaged 💕. Another couple spent a very happy hour sharing and discussing old cards.
A tourist wanted vintage cards of areas visited.
A lovely day.

The Jaunting Cart was very popular in cities and country. Had 2 wheels, seat for driver and 2 side cars back to back for people. The following images are all early 1900s either painted (and enhanced for comical or artistic licence) or the more legit BW.

Time to look at earlier forms of transport in Ireland. Without a motor or fuel.
Particularly loved in Irish culture, the donkey powered the earliest form of country life. The following are some from our collection.
