🍂 𝐃𝐢𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰 𝐒𝐞𝐩𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝐨𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐥𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝟏𝟏 𝐰𝐡𝐨𝐥𝐞 𝐝𝐚𝐲𝐬?
In 1752, the then British Empire changed from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian calendar. To bring the calendar back into line, Wednesday 2 September was followed by Thursday 14 September, meaning 3 to 13 September simply disappeared from the calendar and never historically existed for millions of people.

So if September feels like it goes by quickly, spare a thought for 1752, when it really did!

Here’s to a new month and plenty more history to discover at the Medieval Mile Museum.

😂 That one colleague who can never keep a straight face… that’s Lyn.

We get lots of questions from visitors, and one of the most common is whether St Mary’s is still an active church.

The answer? Not anymore! St Mary’s was decommissioned and became a community and social hall in the 1950s, before beginning a new chapter as the Medieval Mile Museum in 2017.

So no Mass times here these days, but 800 years of Kilkenny history are waiting to be discovered. 🏛️

❖ Every stone has a story... and some still keep their secrets.

William and Margaret Goer's magnificent tomb tells us they were wealthy and influential people in Medieval Kilkenny.

But look a little closer and you'll notice something unusual. The carving appears unfinished, one figure is taller than the other, and the stone itself seems to have been completed in haste.

Could their deaths have been sudden? Was plague the reason? We may never know. Sometimes the greatest stories in history are the questions that remain unanswered.

Visit the Medieval Mile Museum and discover the mystery for yourself.

Nearly 800 years ago, Kilkenny’s civic life was being carefully recorded in the Liber Primus Kilkenniensis, the city’s extraordinary first town book.

Its pages offer a fascinating glimpse into how Medieval Kilkenny was governed and how people lived, recording civic rules, town officials and details of everyday life.

Today, the Liber Primus remains an important part of Kilkenny’s story and one of the fascinating treasures to discover at the Medieval Mile Museum.

❖ Did you know?
For wealthy medieval families, being buried inside a church wasn't just about status.
It was believed that burial within a church, together with prayers offered for your soul, could reduce the time spent in purgatory. The wealthier you were, the more prayers could be said on your behalf, making burial inside St Mary's Church one of the most sought-after resting places in Medieval Kilkenny.

Book your visit today and discover more fascinating stories in person.

For medieval pilgrims, the scallop shell was much more than a souvenir. It was proof they had completed the long and often dangerous journey to Santiago de Compostela, believing the pilgrimage could reduce their time in purgatory.

Not everyone could afford such a journey, so this small shell tells a remarkable story of faith, sacrifice and hope, reminding us that every object has a human story behind it.
