Monochrome Morning
This secluded little cove in West Cork was one of the best finds I had during my HEADLANDS book project. I revisited it several times and almost always had the place to myself.   This morning, clear skies and calm seas were initially not too exciting, but the pre-dawn soft light and the dramatic rock formations had me thinking in black and white from the start.  I made a note to rework these images in monochrome, and now, finally, on a wet January day in Kerry, with the gallery closed, I’ve come back to them and can see how well they work in black and white.   Printing tomorrow!

Derrynane Evening Cloud

I rarely get time to go through my archives and find overlooked images, so today was a real treat. I’ve picked out several images from my KINGDOM book project that perhaps I missed first time around. It’s a creative pursuit in itself, all from the comfort of my studio desk !

I love the texture and drama of this image and I remember at the time it would only work in monochrome, which of course was not going to fit into the book.

EYERIES STORM - 2011

I'm enjoying looking through the archives and picking out some images to have a look at again.

This one pre-dates my first book at a time when I was roaming around freely .. which incidentally is exactly what I will be doing for the next year as I'm taking a break from book projects for the first time in 15 years !!

Hoping to hit the road next week.. no destination except north and west !

.. and thank you so much for of your support during the year, making 2025 our busiest year yet since opening the gallery 10 years ago !!

Huge thanks to all of you who ordered my new book, HEADLANDS, and those lovely people who ordered the Limited Edition also! Your support of the project means so much to me, and I’m very proud of the reaction to it so far.

To all my customers from ARTSOURCE in the RDS .. thank you for making the show another success, and I hope everyone is happy with their new artwork on the walls. ( I will be posting out certificates next week )

And lastly, to all the visitors to the gallery this year.. thanks for making such a busy one, and we all enjoyed meeting and chatting with you.

Now.. it’s time for me to get back out there.. sooo looking forward to just exploring our landscape again.

CAPE CLEAR

An absolute highlight of my final year making my book HEADLANDS was my stay on Cape Clear in springtime. I had visited the island only for the few hours the ferry sailings permitted, so staying a night or two on the island was a game changer. The evening loop hike up to the old lighthouse and back down again long after sunset will stay with me for some time. Beautiful scenes everywhere, great light, and all to myself on a mild evening with no reason to rush back down.

The next morning I headed back up before dawn and was treated to a beautiful sunrise as I sat and watched the lamp from the Fastnet Lighthouse switch off for the day.

A tough edit meant some of these didn’t make the final book but the island is well represented in the final book !

Sheeps Head

One of the most enjoyable areas I spent exploring for my book HEADLANDS was the Sheep’s Head Peninsula. It’s by far the most underrated peninsula along the south-west coast, and takes some time to get to know its real qualities and superb locations.

Although I spent a lot of time here, I left behind some images because I discovered the locations too late, and they are now on the ‘revisit’ list.

Most trips ended up at or began at the lighthouse, which gave me something new every time, and was a real challenge to find a new view on it that I hadn’t seen before. I also wanted to catch it pre-dawn, where you could still see the light on.
