🗣️ HERITAGE WEEK TALK: Digitising a Unique Heritage Collection

Between the 1970s and the early 2000s, William Henry and the late John Monahan recorded approximately 180 historical and cultural lectures delivered to members of the Old Galway Society and Galway Archaeological and Historical Society. These unique heritage recordings feature many distinguished researchers, academics, and authors of local and national renown.

Earlier this year, Galway City Museum secured funding through the Heritage Council’s Heritage Stewardship Fund to support the digitisation of the ‘William Henry and John Monahan Collection’. The project will involve the digitisation and professional mastering of the cassette recordings, together with the creation of a searchable bilingual catalogue. In addition to transferring the recordings to digital format, the audio will be cleaned and enhanced to ensure its long-term preservation and accessibility. Once completed, the collection will be made freely available to researchers and the wider public, bringing this rich archive to new audiences.

Join Brendan McGowan, Education Officer, and local historian and author William Henry as they discuss the background to the collection, the digitisation project, and their hopes for the future of this important heritage resource.

Experience an unforgettable evening of live electronic music with Jimmy Penguin, one of Ireland's most innovative turntablists and electronic music artists.

Founder of Community Skratch and a global ambassador for turntablism, Jimmy has been a driving force in Ireland's underground electronic music scene for decades. With countless production, mastering and performance credits to his name, as well as multiple international turntablist titles, he is renowned for pushing the creative boundaries of electronic music.

For this special Museum Lates performance, Jimmy will showcase Perfect KO—a unique vinyl instrument he spent over a decade developing before its release on Cut & Paste Records. Designed specifically for turntables, Perfect KO allows Jimmy to create complete musical compositions live, transforming the turntable into a truly expressive musical instrument.

Don't miss this unique performance exploring the cutting edge of turntablism, electronic music and live improvisation.

Step into Ireland's martial heritage with Nathan Featherstone, one of the country's leading experts in Irish martial arts and the only person currently teaching two surviving styles of bataireacht (Irish stick fighting) – Antrim Bata and Doyle Bata.

Nathan is also a founding member of the Irish Collar and Elbow Federation, dedicated to preserving Ireland's indigenous wrestling tradition. A respected historian and researcher, he has spent years exploring Ireland's martial heritage and holds black belts and advanced ranks in several other martial arts.

This engaging Museum Lates event includes:

🗣️ Corrib Beo, in collaboration with Galway City Museum, are delighted to announce the details of the sixth talk in the 2026 Museum Talks Series.

We are delighted to welcome Dr. Enda McGovern– a Donegal native and retired Professor of Marketing now living in Athenry – to give a comprehensive talk titled: “Shifting Weather, Rising Seas: Connemara in the Age of Global Risk”.

In this session, Dr. McGovern will draw upon that long-standing research interest to address the specific nature of risk in the modern era. He will lead a discussion exploring environmental vulnerability, and offer a perspective to better understand the impending threats facing the population of the world today.

Speaker Bio:
While Dr. McGovern’s academic career in England and the United States focused on marketing, he has been actively engaging climate change since 1994. His doctoral work includes a Thesis titled: “The Role and Influence of Social Marketing in the Evolution of the Environmental Citizen”, and he has since pursued the intersection of social marketing, risk management and analysis, and climate change.

Galway City Museum will open late on Thursday 30 July from 5pm until 9pm with FREE music performances, talks and new exhibitions.

Part of Galway's Night-Time Economy Programme, Museum Lates is funded through the Department of Culture, Communications and Sport's After Hours at the Museum scheme, with support from Galway City Council. The initiative brings the Museum to life in the evening, creating a welcoming space to discover Galway's history, heritage and creativity after hours while supporting a thriving city-centre cultural scene.

Discover the history and practice of the shillelagh as Nathan Featherstone explores Ireland's indigenous martial arts through a fascinating talk and live demonstration.

🔇 This Saturday is Silent Saturday!

Silent Saturdays are sensory-friendly mornings Galway City Museum Ireland, designed to offer a calmer and more comfortable visit for neurodivergent visitors, people with sensory differences, and anyone who would benefit from a quieter environment.

🗓️ On the last Saturday of every month from 10am to 12pm. This month that's Saturday 25 July 2026!

During this time, sound levels throughout the building are reduced or turned off where possible, large groups visits are discouraged, and the Education Room on Level 2 is available as a designated Quiet Space.

Please note that Silent Saturdays in July and August may be busier than usual due to seasonal visitor numbers.
