Museum dedicated to the life & achievements of Michael Davitt (1846-1906) Father of the Land League, Author, MP, labour Rights activist & International Humanitarian. The museum is located within the RIAI Award winning restored church in which Davitt himself was baptised, and contains a wealth of historical artefacts, personal memorabilia and an invaluable archive. The Museum is adjacent to the mag

nificent 13th Century Straide Abbey (which contains some of the finest medieval carvings in Ireland) and cemetery, in which Davitt was laid to rest in 1906, and his grave now stands.

This week’s Artifact Spotlight shines a light on the beautiful wedding furniture on display at the Michael Davitt Museum.

Among the collection is an elegant table and armchairs gifted to Michael and Mary Davitt following their marriage in 1886 and donated by the Davitt family to the museum. Other finely crafted pieces include napkin rings and a cigarette box among a wide range of interesting artefacts. These items are a reminder of the esteem in which Davitt was held, both in Ireland and abroad.

Did you know? Michael Davitt’s experience as a prisoner shaped his strong belief that the prison system needed reform.

Having endured imprisonment himself, Davitt understood the harsh conditions faced by prisoners. Years later, he continued to speak out for better treatment and greater humanity within prisons, using his own experiences to push for change.

His commitment to prison reform became another part of his wider fight for justice and fairness. 📜

This beautiful illuminated address was presented to Michael Davitt during his visit to New Zealand. Created with intricate lettering, colourful decoration, shamrocks and a harp, it welcomed Davitt and recognised his work for Ireland.

A wonderful example of how Davitt’s influence and travels connected him with Irish communities around the world.🌿

Did you know? Although Michael Davitt lost his right arm in a mill accident as a child, he never wore an artificial replacement. Instead, he embraced his disability with confidence and refused to let it define him. He taught himself to write with his left hand, travelled the world, and became one of Ireland's most influential campaigners—proving that determination is far stronger than any obstacle.

Today, 6th August, we remember the birth of Daniel O'Connell (1775–1847), known as The Liberator. Through peaceful political campaigning, he fought for Catholic Emancipation and the rights of the Irish people, leaving a lasting mark on Ireland's history.

O'Connell's commitment to justice and reform would later inspire campaigners such as Michael Davitt, who continued the struggle for equality and the rights of ordinary people.
