The Rogue’s Gallery is provocative, wickedly funny and uncomfortably accurate.
At the centre of the exhibition is a series of satirical portraits of some of the most powerful individuals shaping — and destabilising — our world order. Walton turns his attention to the human-made systems driving instability, and to the ways power is staged, performed and gradually normalised.
Using the visual language of classical portraiture and history painting, these works feel strangely familiar, almost grand, until the satire begins to bite. Influence becomes theatre, authority becomes performance, and “truth” becomes increasingly negotiable.
There is plenty of dark humour here, but the joke is never empty. The subject matter is frighteningly spot on — making us laugh, wince, and perhaps question what we have become willing to accept.
In a year concerned with what endures and what collapses, Walton asks a particularly sharp question: what are we choosing to preserve, and what are we willing to overlook?
