The Issue

We are Mary Whelan and Esther Almasi, designers, makers, and owners of the Irish Design Loft at Powerscourt, Co. Wicklow. Our store features work from makers and artists all over Ireland. The artists and artisans that we collaborate with put their heart and soul into every creation. Unfortunately, the current Value Added Tax (VAT) rate of 23% on handmade crafts in Ireland is significantly impacting our ability to sustain our artisan community. It is essential for us to support local craftspeople, but this heavy taxation is a major discouragement.

Currently, original paintings benefit from a reduced VAT rate of 13.5%. It is only fair and logical that handmade crafts, which require immense skill, creativity, and manual labor, should be treated with the same consideration. Both original paintings and handmade crafts preserve Irish culture, heritage, and creativity.

Handmade crafts are not merely products. Each item tells a story and contributes to the vibrant tapestry of Irish culture. Lowering the VAT to 13.5% would help craft creators to thrive in their businesses, allowing them to reinvest in their craft and continue to innovate. Many artisans struggle to compete with mass-produced items, and this tax reprieve would provide them a vital boost.

Let's not let this art form suffer due to unfavorable taxation. By reducing the VAT, we encourage a flourishing culture of creativity and craftsmanship in Ireland, helping to support local jobs and sustainable economic growth. If the hospitality industry in Ireland can have their VAT reduced from 13. 5% to 9% this July, benefitting not just small indiginous companies but also large multinationals, why can't our government support us in keeping our small businesses afloat?

Please join us in signing this petition to urge the Irish government to realign the VAT on handmade crafts with that of original paintings, reducing it from 23% to 13.5%. Help us preserve the living heritage of Irish craftsmanship for future generations.
