The National 1798 Rebellion Centre

We are delighted to be hosting this stunning exhibition "Common Grounds", created by the wonderful Wednesday group at The Lodge Daycare, run by The Alzheimer Society of Ireland

This colourful display features a series of works created over several sessions with the group. With the help of artist Sarah Cogley Art, the artists were able to bring to life a variety of different materials and create these beautiful pieces.

"Common Grounds" will be on display until Wednesday the 2nd of September.

National Heritage Week has been filled with fascinating talks and workshops here in the National 1798 Rebellion Centre.

With our guided tour of Vinegar Hill giving an in depth look into the events that occurred during the Longest Day Battle, to our insightful talk on Wolfe Tone himself, this week has seen history and heritage come to life.

Then it was time for visitors to get their hands dirty with our Traditional Mud Building workshop run with the amazing Cob On, an interesting insight into the traditional technique.

We have even more events lined up this week, our "1798 Streets of Rebellion - Walking Tour" on Friday the 21st of August at 10am (Leaving from the 1798 Centre"

Then we have our "The Weapon's of 1798" display on Sunday the 23rd of August at 12.30pm to finish our Heritage Week off.

"1798 Streets of Rebellion Walking Tour"

Friday the 21st of August at 10am. (Leaving from the 1798 Centre)

A historic walk through Enniscorthy Town through the streets and locations associated with the 1798 Rebellion. Walk the streets where the fighting took place and hear the stories of the people who lived through the Rebellion.

"Skills Workshop, Traditional Mud Building"

Wednesday the 19th of August at 2pm till 5pm.

Join Ger Cussen for a practical workshop exploring traditional built heritage methods using low-impact, sustainable mud building techniques. This engaging hands-on session will demonstrate how natural earth-based materials have been used for centuries to construct and repair buildings, while highlighting their continued relevance in modern conservation.

Discover the environmental and heritage benefits of working with traditional materials and consider how these sustainable practices can play a role in the future of the built environment.

Through demonstration and discussion, this workshop will help you imagine a future where low-impact heritage materials once again become an integral part of construction, repair, and conservation.

Heritage Week Event:

"Wolfe Tone’s Journey, from Reformer to Rebel"

Wednesday the 19th of August at 3pm.

Wolfe Tone’s involvement in Irish politics commenced in 1790. Tone was a founding member of the Society of United Irishmen and was involved in the society’s calls for parliamentary reform in the early 1790s. By 1795, Tone was in exile in America, and his role in politics had been dramatically altered, with separatist ideals now to the fore of his political ambitions. This talk will explore the factors that influenced Wolfe Tone’s involvement in Irish politics and prompted his evolution from a reformer to a rebel.

"The Bridge to Democracy, The Road to 1798"

Tuesday the 18th of August at 10am – 10.30am

Thursday the 20th of August at 2pm – 2.30pm

“The Bridge to Democracy” is marked with the names and dates of various nations who rebelled with the aim of having their voices heard by casting a vote for leadership. With each step, you walk through history as you build up to the events of 1798 here in Wexford. Learn of these nations as we drive deeper in those events.
