‘Vintage Fag with bra 1940, when really it’s a fag with a fag in a bra’ by Alan Phelan, showing as part of our group exhibition, ‘Totems’.
This piece is from a series of self-portraits where different q***r identities are performed and forms part of a broader project to give the Joly screen process a visual history it never had, as it was quickly superseded by cheaper, more efficient colour photography methods in the early twentieth century. Like many of his early self-portrait shots, Phelan used a vintage photo as a reference, in this case, a random one with no identifiable author. Through these shots, Phelan explores figurative poses from various q***r photographers, not as strict re-enactments, but as re-readings or approximations, with some based on famous images and some, like this one, totally anonymous.
Alan Phelan is one of the 111 selected participants exhibiting at the 61st Venice Biennale International Art Exhibition, In Minor Keys, curated by the late Koyo Kouoh. The exhibition consists of individual artists, collaborative duos, collectives, and artist-led organisations, and runs until November 22nd, 2026...
