’Shoreline mystery’ a painting by Alison Pilkington from her exhibition at the gallery, on view until May 28th.
In the catalogue essay for Pilkington’s solo show at The Model, Sligo, in 2021, Francis McKee writes of the artist that she draws heavily on β€˜our historical and instinctual sense of the still mysterious sea and its role in the shaping of human culture. The amorphous figures that populate the shoreline of her island incorporate aspects of her own memories of Sligo with wider aspects of her identity as a woman and artist. The figures, perhaps aspects of her own self, shape-shift in the unstable zone of the shoreline drifting back and forth across boundaries of the animate (consciousness, emotions, the nervous system to the inanimate (stone, mist, light, flame).’

β€˜Lord of the hollow’ is a painting by Alison Pilkington from her solo show opening at the gallery this evening.
The show takes its title from the Syliva Plath poem, β€˜Two sisters of Persephone’, where the poet offers two archetypes of femininity framed as sisters - one constrained by social expectations or internal repression, with the other embodying a freer, more instinctual self. Pilkington’s work draws on a similar binary, exploring dualities and tensions within the self and within the role of a woman in society more broadly.

The artist was awarded a practice-led PhD in painting from the National College Art and Design, Dublin, in 2015. She was awarded the British Institution Award for painting at the Royal Academy Summer Show, London (2012), and was selected for the Marmite Painting Prize exhibition, London (2012 and 2016), the MePaintsMe International painting exhibition (2025) and was shortlisted for the Kurt Beers 100 Painters of Tomorrow publication (2013).
Recent exhibitions include: the Complex Dublin (2025); the Canopy Program, Chelsea, New York (2024); the Schonfeld Gallery Brussels (2022); the Model Sligo (2021); and the RHA Ashford Gallery (2018).

Our solo exhibition of work by Francis Matthews continues until Thursday, April 23rd.
…
β€˜Francis Matthews is in many ways a remarkable painter. For EXT / INT, his sixth solo show at Molesworth Gallery, he continues his meticulous oil-on-board explorations of the urban fabric – alleys, junctions, facades and boundaries – while also expanding inward with a series of four studies of domestic interiors.
All are similarly muted in tone, and there are instructive affinities to be found across his indoor and outdoor scenes. Kitchen, an interior viewed through and partially obscured by a patio door, echoes the obstructed vantage points presented in Sarsfield, Crumlin and New, while Newel, a quarter-turned view of a staircase landing shares a certain sense of liminality with Matthew’s four renderings of a traffic junction in Inchicore.’
- excerpted from a review of the show by Aengus Woods in The Irish Times (April 8, 2025)

β€˜Francis Matthews explains that he specialises in night scenes because he is interested in the dynamics of light. This seems, initially, to be a contradiction, but makes sense when it is considered that man-made illumination – the gleam of streetlights, the beam from traffic headlamps, the glow from domestic and commercial windows – only becomes fully visible once daylight has faded. Matthews’ vision is therefore at its most acute in the hours of darkness. At that time also, the streets are relatively deserted of human and vehicular traffic. His built milieu is redolent of its creators and users, yet without their embodied presence. There are no distractions from the urban landscape environment he projects; it is at once a subject in its own right, and a world presented for the viewer to imaginatively occupy.’

- taken from β€˜The Dynamics of Light’, an essay on the artist by Dr Yvonne Scott..

The Molesworth Gallery is delighted to present an exhibition of new paintings by Francis Matthews. In this latest body of work, followers of the artist will recognise the familiar subject matter of urban architecture: details of streets and buildings that might otherwise go unnoticed or be cursorily dismissed as unworthy of representation due to a drab or discordant appearance. For Matthews, however, these mundane elements of the urban landscape are ripe with possibilities, energized by the sophisticated interplay of light and shadow.

Francis Matthews graduated with a first-class honours degree in architecture from UCD before pursuing a career as an artist. He has won multiple awards, including the Hennessy Craig Scholarship at the RHA Annual.

The gallery has published a hardback book to accompany the exhibition, with an introductory text by architectural and cultural historian, Dr Ellen Rowley.

Michelle Conway’s solo show continues at the gallery until Friday evening. ..
The show conists of a body of work begun in 2023 and documents the rooms - the kitchens, the parlours, the bedrooms - that were the crucible of the maternal line of Conway’s family. The number 598 references the address of the house in Upstate New York that the artist’s Italian great-grandmother bought and all succeeding generations of women in the family have occupied at some point. There are also scenes from the house where she now lives in Ireland and the house in Candela, in southeast Italy, where her great-grandmother was born, and the artist recently spent an extended period of time.
The paintings have a spectral quality, as memories of place form and dissolve on the canvas, with some details omitted or misremembered and others heightened with a flash of colour that leaps out from the muted background tones. As a painter, Conway’s process begins with darkness, which she scrapes away like an archaeologist, uncovering a sense of place as much as an actual representation of it.
Conway holds a first-class honours degree in fine art from ATU Galway (2011) and an MFA from Goldsmiths, London (2014). She has shown at the RA Summer Exhibition; the Contemporary British Painting Prize Exhibition (where she was a shortlisted artist); Γ‰igse; Tulca; the Royal Ulster Academy; Sid Motion Gallery and Bolee Gallery (London); and Beep Biennal (Wales). She lives and works in Galway.
