“Arbitrary Nations challenges our idea of national identity and how we represent it. It’s an unending series of fictional flags” - Asbestos

As part of our week-long event, Art, Migration, and the Politics of Belonging (14-20 September) artist Asbestos will expand his installation, Arbitrary Nations, into a new site-specific installation for our Education Studio, in collaboration with the National Gallery of Ireland’s Youth Panel.

Exploring ideas of borders, identity, citizenship and collective belonging, the Arbitrary Nations installation will invite audiences into a space filled with fictional flags. These flags represent the random, ephemeral, and idiosyncratic things we have in common - shared traits that extend beyond borders. Developed in collaboration with young people, the project encourages participants and visitors alike to consider how nations, identities and systems of belonging are constructed, negotiated and experienced.

🎒 We’re looking forward to the start of a new school year here at the Gallery by announcing that our ‘Transition Year and Youth Work Placements’ and ‘Your Gallery at School and in your Community’ programmes are both open for applications! Both programmes are an exciting opportunity for young people across the country to engage with the national collection.

Our ‘Transition Year and Youth Work Experience Placements’ have been running for 20 years, and offer young people aged 15–17 the opportunity to experience working life at the Gallery. Participants will gain insight into careers across the Gallery, from conservation, curatorial practice, learning, to visitor engagement and behind-the-scenes operations.

The ‘Your Gallery at School and in your Community’ programme brings the national collection into classrooms and community settings across Ireland through co-created artist-led projects. Successful schools and youth groups will work with a professional artist to develop their own unique project inspired by the national collection and their local area, informed by the national curriculum.

Applications are open to all schools and educational settings for children and young people under 18, with encouragement for those working with communities facing educational disadvantage or other barriers.

The Gallery works in partnership with SMBC Aviation Capital to allow the schools programme to extend access to high-quality arts education through four initiatives: ‘Your Gallery at School and in your Community’, ‘My Primary School is at the Gallery’ and ‘Transition Year Placements’. Together, these programmes will help bring the national collection to more classrooms across the country, and create new opportunities for young people to explore creativity and culture.

This September, we are proud to partner with Maynooth University and HIDDEN (History of Identity Documentation in European Nations), a major European research network, to host a week of events exploring the key themes of citizenship, identity, migration, language and representation.

Art, Migration, and the Politics of Belonging will take place in various parts of the Gallery from 14-20 September. Responding to themes of citizenship, migration, identity, language and representation, the programme invites people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities to engage with these urgent questions through artistic practice and shared experience.

Featuring leading and emerging artists, writers, academics, educators and performers, it encompasses contemporary art installations, a major international symposium, film screenings, public tours, archival displays, professional development training, participatory events and inclusive sensory workshops.
