IPUT Living Canvas at IMMA is currently showing John Beattie’s film An Artist, The Studio, and all the rest... 2006 - 2012. The RHA was central to making this work with several Academy Members, including Mick O'Dea, Des McMahon, Carey Clarke, Stephen McKenna, and Tom Ryan (all former RHA Presidents, PPRHA), featuring in the film.

A panel discussion on making creative spaces takes place tomorrow at 6pm, 1 Sept, at the Irish Museum of Modern Art, Kilminham, Dublin 8, with Mary Cremin, Niall Gaffney, Ruth Lyons, and Alan Gilsenan, moderated by Gemma Tipton. See imma.ie to reserve a free space.

The 196th RHA Annual Exhibition in association with McCann FitzGerald may be over but the Sunday Independent’s Niall MacMonagle is continuing to write about art that caught his eye this year. Last weekend he interviewed artist Emma Stroude:

‘Enough (After Rego), which exhibited at this year's RHA Annual Exhibition. is based on a 1995 pastel work by British-Portuguese artist Paula Rego called Two Women Being Stoned. "In Rego's piece, two women crouch submissivelv with arms outstretched. One woman is bent double, her right hand protects her head. Another woman crouches submissivelv and looks towards their aggressor. It is a surrender, but the woman does not appear weak.

‘The Rego painting has been described as a universal picture of violence against women. Rego's work prompted Stroude to question "how far we (all genders) have come and how far we still have to go", She decided "to extend the pose to three figures, two protecting themselves and one appealing to the aggressor Unlike Rego's work, the two sheltering figures make direct eye contact with the viewer. to engage them in the situation and ask for their reflection."’

We are delighted to offer this very special event for RHA Friends ONLY on Thurs 10 Sept, marking the opening of the new season of exhibitions at the RHA, with a dinner at Margadh RHA.

The menu is designed by Chef Cathal Leonard, formerly head chef at Chapter One and Chef-Patron of the award-winning Potager in Skerries. Margadh has had wonderful reviews this year, voted one of Ireland's 100 great places to eat for summer 2026 by the Irish Times and the best Sunday lunch in Dublin by the Sunday Times.

You’ll arrive to a welcome drink, beginning the dinner with shared nibbles, followed by a choice of mains and finishing with a decadent dessert.

Buildings from a Novel consists primarily of a series of sculptures that were made while artist and writer Adrian Duncan was writing his recently published novel A Thought Without Collision (Tuskar Rock Press). These sculptures, which resemble fictional buildings imagined in the novel, belong to points in an imaginary terrain.

The video work shown alongside the sculptures, also titled Buildings from a Novel shows a conversation between two characters from this novel as they discuss the destiny of the house they are standing in. This conversation takes place as they stand over a model of this house, a model that also appears as a sculpture in this show.

We were thrilled recently to bring the RHA Friends on an exclusive tour of Visual Poetry: The Photography of John Minihan at the National Gallery of Ireland, in the company of Sarah McAuliffe, Curator of Irish Art post 1900.

Focusing on the extraction of rock from a mountain shaped over hundreds of millions of years, Fionn McCann explores the tension between geological time and human labour. His photographs reveal the layers, cuts and traces left by quarrying, while also turning attention to the workers who shape the landscape, many of whom have travelled from Lithuania.

Connecting this remote Atlantic site to wider histories of migration, labour and the movement of skills across Europe, Deconstructing a Mountain considers photography and quarrying as parallel acts of selection and revelation, inviting us to see landscape not as fixed, but as something continually made and remade.

Lake Burst is the title of an upcoming exhibition at the RHA by Irish Trinidadian interdisciplinary artist Maïa Nunes.

It consists of a single body of artistic works made in response to a pair of glacial lakes, Lough Bré, at the top of the Glencree Valley. Made over the course of five years, the exhibition showcases Nunes’ expansive and transdisciplinary approach to artistic practice, embracing film, live performance, textile, installation, stone sculpture, music and sound.

As part of this exhibition, Nunes will launch her highly anticipated 8-track vinyl concept album, titled Lake Burst. The installation will become a stage as she performs her Lake Burst album live with a full band of stellar musicians at the RHA – further information to follow.

The 196th RHA Annual Exhibition, In association with McCann FitzGerald, may be over but our minds have flashbacked to 1980, courtesy of former Irish Times photographer Cyril Byrne.

Cyril sent us this half-page from the Irish Times, dated Friday 4th July 1980, featuring some of the artworks on display at that year’s Annual Exhibition, held in the National Gallery of Ireland, photographed by Dermot O'Shea.

Fingal County Council Arts Office in partnership with the Royal Hibernian Academy is pleased to announce Fingal artist Aideen Farrell as the recipient of the RHA school studio residency 2026/2028.

This prestigious award provides one professional artist with a funded studio space in the RHA for two years beginning at the end of October 2026. Exact dates to be confirmed. This award is open to professional practising artists at all career stages working in Visual Art. This year marks the first year of the residency's extension to two years.

The RHA School is a purpose-built facility within the RHA Gallery, consisting of individual studios, open-plan drawing studios and a library. It is an artist-led space for the provision of skill-based learning in Visual Art. Central to the RHA School’s activity is peer learning, where knowledge and experience can be passed from artist to artist. The RHA School supports both traditional and contemporary approaches to art making, and its offerings aim to enhance the skill set of artists working in the varied and shifting arena of current art practice.

Fingal Arts Officer Sarah O'Neill said, "We are delighted to have Aideen in the RHA Studio for 2026-2028. This is the first year this award has been extended to a two-year residency. We are sure this time will allow the artists to fully immerse themselves in their practice."

Colin Martin, Head of the RHA School, said, "RHA School and Studios are delighted to announce that Aideen Farrell is the recipient of the Fingal Arts Studio at the RHA. Farrell works across sculpture and installation with found objects and readymade materiality to create staged infrastructural ruins. Her process involves collecting and assembling these forms into new configurations and spatial assemblages that are sensitive and specific to their site. Farrell will commence a two-year residency in Oct 2026."

Aideen Farrell commented, "I am excited and grateful to receive this Fingal and RHA Studio award. This two-year award will provide me with a secure space to focus on my practice, which will greatly benefit from a longer-term period of research and making. The work I want to make will respond to industrial landscapes and infrastructural ruins, through working with material detritus and traces of routes and stories. I will engage in sculptural processes with found and made materials, allowing for iterative outcomes throughout this residency."
