The Irish home of independent, unsettling and inappropriate art. GalleryX is a new gallery in Dublin, Ireland specialising in figurative and surrealist art.

Our focus is on the fantastical, the erotic and the macabre; on alternative desire and tormented bodies; on the bizarrely beautiful, the unsettling and the grotesque. Art that will question and entertain. Our intent is to facilitate, curate and showcase new alternative work from emerging Irish artists and to host visiting artists from the global community. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗔𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗩𝗲𝗻𝘂𝘀 is a multimedia performance created in response to the work of Clemente Michelangelo Susini, whose 18th-century wax anatomical figures - on show at the Museo della Specola in Florence – depict the female body in intricate detail, adorned with real human hair and pearl jewellery. While created for medical study, their beauty and delicate presentation raise questions around the objectification and fetishisation of the female body, and the expectations placed upon women even in death.

In response to this intersection of anatomy, beauty, and display, physical performer Katerina Kanimou and Heather Slevin explore the relationship between the female body and autonomy, questioning how patriarchal ideas of femininity and sexuality have shaped its representation.

On Tuesday the 20th of October this year falls Vijaya Dashami or Dussehra, the victory of the ferocious Mother Goddess, whose disturbingly awesome form as the Goddess Kali is one of the most well-known of the Hindu pantheon, inspiring many further across the world, from the Rolling Stones to neopagan feminists, though not unproblematically.

As much as Her frightful iconography has captivated the Western imagination, Her true nature has not been so well understood. Her mythic origin story is detailed within the ancient scripture celebrated in the Navaratri festival which reaches its culmination on this day.

For this event, Dolorosa de la Cruz and BC present a special event at GalleryX, with Dolorosa de la Cruz presenting her nine original paintings of the Navadurga: aspects of the fierce Divine Feminine worshipped during the nine nights of the festival.

These paintings were themselves completed on the appropriate nights of Autumn 2023, and BC will give a short talk outlining this festival, its mythology, and the origin of Kali, including a melodic recitation and illuminating translation of the relevant Sanskrit hymns.

Did you know that in 1969, while Federico Fellini was working on his 𝗦𝗮𝘁𝘆𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗼𝗻, an enterprising Italian filmmaker, Gian Luigi Polidoro, quickly filmed a similar work to take advantage of the buzz surrounding the great master's new film? It wasn't just some cheap knockoff with third rate actors though. It features important Italian comic actors like Ugo Tognazzi, Franco Fabrizi and Mario Carotenuto, and its scenes are often eerily similar to the better known contemporary pic. I have seen both and honestly I don't know which one I prefer.

The film was also dogged by scandal as some of its more b***y scenes involved Giton the protagonist's adolescent rent boy, who was played by a 14-year old actor.

Anyway - no spoilers! The films shown tomorrow are still a surprise.

Alongside the works by Leonor Fini herself, the exhibition includes a set of paintings by one of our favourite artists - Dolorosa De La Cruz. Her esoteric work also explores the power of the female soul.

This particular work, For Fini, clearly references Fini's love for cats. But have you looked at the eyes?

Unlike many of the other works in the exhibition, this one is available for purchase.
