Upcoming Event | Open Session with Feidhlimidh
Wednesday 3 June, 7-8.30pm

Join us for an evening hosted by 'feidhlimidh' at The Douglas Hyde in response to our open call for events engaging with our current exhibition 'EX/IT:LIFT' by Abbas Zahedi. During this session, there will be a collective lift of Zahedi's central work 'LIFT'.

Drawing on their research into energy systems and notions of collective and individual agency, feidhlimidh has invited friends with a commitment to community building to participate in the performance of the piece, as well as the artists DJ Powerbutton and Ireland to play music before and after the LIFT session.

The evening will begin with a playing of the musical works ‘our governments are bombing the world’ and ‘& more’ by DJ Powerbutton, and will conclude with a five member performance of the horn band Ireland.

Curator's Tour | EX/IT:LIFT
Thursday 28 May, 6.30pm

Join us for a special Curator’s Tour of our current exhibitions EX/IT: LIFT by artist Abbas Zahedi and The Artist’s Eye: Bushra Mustafa Dunne, as part of Dublin by Dusk.

For his exhibition, Zahedi presents a newly commissioned body of work that interrogates bureaucratic systems – administrative, religious, institutional, and militaristic. Through a series of sound sculptures, some of which sound alarms, whilst others reflect endless rhythms of manual labour or ritual practice; Zahedi explores the capacity of the gallery space to challenge dominant systems through dialogue and collective action.

The Artist’s Eye series asks those exhibiting in Gallery 1 to invite an artist of influence to present work in Gallery 2. In this instalment Abbas Zahedi has invited poet Bushra Mustafa Dunne to write and record a new poem. Evoking the Irish mourning tradition of keening, Dunne’s new poem weaves together personal narratives and reflections on militarism, memory, and grief, to imagine shared histories of sonic rituals and communal grieving.

This tour is free and welcome to all.

ARTIST TALK | Abbas Zahedi in conversation with Eomac
Tuesday 28 April, 6.30pm

There's still time to book your free place at our upcoming Artist Talk with our current exhibiting artist, Abbas Zahedi. The talk takes place in tandem with Zahedi's exhibition 'EX/IT: LIFT' which presents a newly commissioned body of sound sculptures.

Zahedi will be joined in conversation with Eomac, Irish composer, DJ and producer. The conversation will draw on previous collaborations and shared themes of sounds of resistance in their practices.

All are welcome! Bookings are free and can be made via the link in our bio.

Abbas Zahedi is an artist who engages with systems of care, thresholds of experience, and the creation of communal spaces for dialogue through his work. With a background in medicine and training in psychiatry, Zahedi brings scientific, philosophical, and poetic insights to bear on fixed narratives around art, history, and institutional life.

Eomac, Ian McDonnell, is a producer, DJ and label owner. He has released music with Planet Mu, Stroboscopic Artefacts, Bedouin Records, Trilogy Tapes, Killekill and his own Eotrax imprint. He is one half of duos Lakker, noeverything and Lena Andersson.

The talk is free to attend, and everyone is welcome! Book a free place here:

Thank you to everyone who visited 'Just Another Human Experience' by artist Atsushi Kaga at The Douglas Hyde over the past months!

We were delighted to present Atsushi Kaga's first institutional exhibition in his adopted home since 2008. This commissioned solo exhibition transformed the gallery into a space of four seasons bringing together large-scale and small paintings, bronze works and a large sculptural pavilion at the centre of Gallery 1. The four seasons of the year correspond to the gallery’s north, east and west walls, surrounding a central ‘Summer’ pavilion.

'Just Another Human Experience' was accompanied by three paintings by Stephen McKenna as part of The Artist's Eye Series.

Over the course of the exhibition, we were pleased to host an exciting engagement programme of events, including an Artist Talk by Atsushi Kaga in conversation with gallery Director Georgina Jackson.

We were delighted to host two Research Talks in response to Kaga's exhibition. Ruth Starr, Assistant Professor of History of Japanese Art and Architecture at Trinity College Dublin, explored Japanese influences on Atsushi Kaga's work. This talk is now available to listen back to online. Dr. Anthony McIntyre, Assistant Professor in Film and Media at University College Dublin, examined how cute aesthetics emerge in Atsushi Kaga's artworks.

In December, The Student Forum hosted a zine-making workshop for their Winter Open Forum, inviting participants to explore the worlds created by Atsushi Kaga.

As part of our Response Series, we presented a newly commissioned text by poet Jessica Foley, exploring the emotional resonance of Atsushi Kaga's work.

Lastly, we were excited to present 'Aesop's Fables,' a special performance devised by artist Isadora Epstein. Taking place within the Summer Pavilion, featured animals recounted old fables as well as fantasical new ecologies.

The gallery is now closed for the installation of our upcoming exhibition. To learn more about our programme, visit our website via our link in bio.

During the run of our current exhibition, 'Just Another Human Experience' by Atsushi Kaga, we were delighted to welcome Ambassador MIYAGAWA Manabu to The Douglas Hyde Gallery of Contemporary Art who received a special tour from the artist.

Educated in Tokyo and Dublin, Atsushi Kaga merges Japanese storytelling cultures from Manga and anime with the work of painters from Hasegawa Tōhaku (1539-1610) to James McNeill Whistler (1834-1903). Working across paintings, installations and sculpture, Kaga creates an alternate universe with a cast of characters exploring cultural politics, the quest for personal identity, and the struggles of daily life.

'Just Another Human Experience' runs until this Sunday, 22nd February, 2026.
