🇮🇪 They Were Told to Leave… They Stayed.

In 1982, as the Israeli invasion of Lebanon unfolded, chaos swept across southern Lebanon.

Bombs fell. Tanks advanced. Entire towns were caught in the crossfire.

And in the middle of it all stood Irish peacekeepers.

Serving under the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), Irish troops were suddenly no longer observing peace… they were surrounded by war.

They were warned.
They were pressured.
They were told to abandon their positions.

But they didn’t.

Instead, Irish soldiers made a choice that would define their legacy.

👉 They held their ground.

While others pulled back, Irish troops:

Stayed at their posts as Israeli forces moved through their areas
Continued protecting civilians trapped in villages
Refused to leave, even when isolated and under threat
Stood between armed forces and ordinary people

They were peacekeepers… but in that moment, they became something more.

Not aggressors.
Not retreating soldiers.
But a line that refused to break.

For the civilians sheltering behind them, that decision meant everything.

It meant protection.
It meant stability in chaos.
It meant someone did not walk away.

🇮🇪 Ireland lost 47 soldiers during its mission in Lebanon.
But their courage earned something just as lasting… respect.

Even today, in parts of southern Lebanon, Irish troops are remembered not for fighting wars…

…but for standing their ground when it mattered most.

They were sent to keep the peace… but in 1982, they had to hold it together.
