To mark Poetry Day Ireland 2026 and the theme of ‘Home’, we are celebrating the contribution of poetry to telling the story of 14 Henrietta Street.

Artists offer another way of interpreting the house, building on the knowledge already held within the museum and the stories of the people who called this place home.

In 2019, renowned Irish poet Paula Meehan and award-winning photographer Dragana Jurišić joined forces to create ‘MUSEUM’, a 68-page book exploring the rich history of 14 Henrietta Street. MUSEUM features 11 sonnets inspired by the house, including This Bed, This Raft on Stormy Seas, which was also commissioned as a short film for the 14 Henrietta Street tour.

Both Paula’s words and Dragana’s photography beautifully capture the story of the building and the lives lived in it.

14 Henrietta Street is delighted to launch its new online wallpaper exhibition, Layers of Time.

Carefully collected and conserved during the restoration of 14 Henrietta Street in 2016, fragments of wallpaper remain as faint traces of the lives lived within these walls. Dating from around the mid 20th century, they offer us a glimpse into the tastes, social aspirations and resilience of the 14 Henrietta Street tenants at that time.

Layers of Time tells the story of wallpaper from an elite, handcrafted, luxury item, to an affordable and industrially made product. From hand-painted panorama, to mass produced print, wallpaper is a historical document of cultural, technological, and social change.

The online exhibition includes a gallery where you can view the collection of original wallpaper fragments found in the house, and a slider which allows you to see a recreation of what that wallpaper might have looked like.

Our Artists in Residence engage with the museum’s collection, which includes the building itself, physical artefacts and Oral Histories collected through the Your Tenement Memories programme. By listening and talking with the museum team, former residents, visitors and the local community, the artists in residence make new works that respond to the memories and knowledge of others.

The nine foot long tapestry of fabrics by visual artist Orlagh Meegan-Gallagher is a timeline of the 300 year old history of the building, once a Georgian Residence, then tenement residences and now an award winning social history museum.

The artwork connects all of the women through the building's history, from the silks of the Georgian inhabitants to the tough blankets of the tenement families. Different panels in the artwork feature historic fabrics, styles, and patterns of embroidery and stitching, remembering the women who lived in Georgian Dublin, in the tenement buildings, and particularly in 14 Henrietta Street. The artwork has also been stitched by visitors to the museum, tour guides, and children from a local primary school

Through our people-first approach, we work with artists to explore the museum, its collection, and the stories of those who lived here, offering visitors new ways to connect with Dublin’s social history.
